Waste Minimisation Programme

Scottish Environment Protection Agency SEPA’s main aim is to provide an efficient and integrated environmental protection system for Scotland which will improve the environment and contribute to the Government’s goal of sustainable development.

Programme Objectives “To stimulate an effective business response to environmental developments by encouraging waste minimisation activity”

Programme Objectives  To support businesses to implement resource efficiency measures that result in environmental improvement and financial savings  To disseminate and reward best environmental practice  To support SEPA staff to ensure that promotion of resource efficiency becomes part of core business  To provide expert guidance on resource efficiency and waste minimisation, particularly in relation to relevant legislation  To develop and maintain effective partnerships to improve the effectiveness of resource efficiency programmes in Scotland

What is Waste Minimisation? Waste minimisation is: ‘the prevention or reduction of raw materials, water or energy consumption at source’ Prevention ( Highest priority) Reduction Reuse Recycling Recovery Disposal (Lowest priority)

How is Waste Minimisation Achieved?  Prevention at source  Simple house keeping actions (see checklist)  New process technology  Examining supplier links  Not end of pipe  Re-use and recycling onsite are complementary  Waste minimisation clubs and networks  Free waste minimisation onsite help
