Topic: Circulatory system Aim: Describe the parts of the blood. Do Now: Explain why you have blood in your body. HW: Read pgs top of 545. Write down.
The Functions of Blood Carries nutrients, water, oxygen and waste products to and from your body cells. Helps regulate temperature and water content. Delivers.
Do Now: Purple books: p. 951 figure 37-7 Please Answer the Question!
Transport/Circulatory System A. Purpose  Delivers O 2 to cells in exchange for CO 2  Transports nutrients, hormones, gases & wastes  Aids in fighting.

Lab #15 Blood What are the parts of the blood? What are some diseases that affect human blood?

OBSERVING RED BLOOD CELLS, WHITE BLOOD CELLS AND PLATELETS TASK #1 OBSERVING RED BLOOD CELLS, WHITE BLOOD CELLS AND PLATELETS

Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes = scientific name) Human Blood Parts Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes = scientific name) Carry oxygen (gas) Protein = Hemoglobin – helps them hold on to the oxygen Most numerous in a blood smear

Red Blood Cells Draw one or two RBC’s on your chart on page 2 where it says drawings and labels Label Cell membrane Cytoplasm Number of cells in field (count) = 100 Cell membrane Cytoplasm

White Blood Cells (Leukocytes = scientific name) Human Blood Parts White Blood Cells (Leukocytes = scientific name) Function in the immune system Much larger than RBC’s Least Numerous Surround and engulf bacteria = phagocytosis Since they help fight infections a high number of them may indicate that you are sick and/or have a disease!

White Blood Cells Draw one or two WBC’s on your chart on page 2 where it says drawings and labels Label: Cell membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus Number of cells in field (count) = 15 Cell membrane Nuclear material This is it!! Cytoplasm

Platelets (Thrombocyte = scientific name) Human Blood Parts Platelets (Thrombocyte = scientific name) Function in clotting “Dot-like” fragments scattered throughout smear Cell fragments, not cells! Next most numerous

Platelets Draw some platelets on your chart on page 2 where it says drawings and labels. You DO NOT have to label anything for these. They are the little purple dots!!! “t” stands for thrombocyte Number of cells in field (count) = 50

Human Blood Parts Plasma Functions in transporting nutrients and hormones. Separates this way due to density. Yellowish in color On your lab, sketch the test tube showing the separation of blood Label the parts of the blood as shown in the diagram

Observing a healthy human blood smear TASK #2 Observing a healthy human blood smear

Human Blood Smear Magnification 800x Identify: Red Blood cell Label cell membrane Label cytoplasm WBC Label nucleus Platelets White blood cell Magnification 800x

Observing common blood diseases and disorders TASK #3 Observing common blood diseases and disorders

Leukemia Smear Magnification 800x Identify: Red Blood cell Label cell membrane Label cytoplasm WBC NOTICE THAT THE NUCLEUS IS MUCH BIGGER! Label nucleus Platelets Diseased white blood cell Magnification 800x

SICKLE CELL ANEMIA Magnification 800x Identify: Red Blood cell Label cell membrane Label cytoplasm Sickle cell WBC Label cell mem Label nucleus Platelets Magnification 800x

Mononucleosis Smear Magnification 800x Identify: Red Blood cell Label cell membrane Label cytoplasm WBC NOTICE THE WATERY APPEARANCE OF THE WBC Label nucleus Platelets Magnification 800x

Observing the blood of other vertebrates TASK #4 Observing the blood of other vertebrates

Frog Blood Identify: Red Blood cell Label cell membrane Label cytoplasm Label nucleus WBC Label cell mem Platelets Platelet

Bird blood Identify: Red Blood cell Label cell membrane Label cytoplasm Label nucleus WBC Label cell mem Platelets Just draw some dots! Red blood cell White blood cell
