p. 284 A.Q. 1a, 2ab, 3ab, 4ab

1a. What are chromosomes? 1a. Chromosomes are bundles of DNA that store most of a cell’s genetic information. p. 284 A.Q. 1a, 2ab, 3ab, 4ab 2a. What is the cell cycle? 2a. The cell cycle is a series of events that a cell goes through as it grows and divides. 2b. During which phase of the cell cycle are chromosomes replicated? 2b. Chromosomes are replicated during interphase. Growth

3a. What happens during each of the four phases of mitosis? Write one or two sentences for each phase. 3a. Prophase: DNA in the nucleus condenses and the spindle fibers begin to form. Metaphase: The chromosomes line up and the spindle fibers attach to the centromeres. Anaphase: The chromosomes separate and move to opposite of the cell. Telophase: The chromosomes begin to unwind and the spindle fibers begin to break apart. 3b. What do you predict would happen if the spindle fibers were disrupted during metaphase? 3b. The centromeres would not attach to the spindle fibers and the chromosomes could not be pulled apart during anaphase. p. 284 A.Q. 1a, 2ab, 3ab, 4ab

4a. What is cytokinesis and when does it occur? 4a. Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm and it occurs at the end of cell division. p. 284 A.Q. 1a, 2ab, 3ab, 4ab 4b. How does cytokinesis differ in animal and plant cells? 4b. In animal cells, the cell membrane pinches in half to form two cells. In plant cells, a cell plate forms that gradually develops into cell membranes separating the daughter cells. Eventually, a cell wall forms between the two daughter cells.
