DISPOSAL DIVISION SCALE HOUSE SANITATARY LANDFILL TRANSFER STATION In 1987 Marion County took over operations of the Baseline Solid Waste Facility (Landfill) prior to then it was operated by private companies. The Baseline Landfill consist of four cells total; Urban cell, A cell (lined), B cell (lined), C cell (lined), presently, waste is being introduce into the C cell. On average we dispose under 200,000 tons of Class I & III material into the Baseline Landfill. In 2004, Marion County Transfer Station was open. This is also known as out-of-county disposal. Currently, Marion County Board of County Commissioners has chosen to stop this operation and instead to landfill everything that comes into our facility. Another fact about Marion County Solid Waste Department is that we take SAFETY very seriously. So serious that we are about to hit 300,000 hours with no lost time due to injury. People have die working at landfills; either ran over by heavy equipment or by other trucks.

COLLECTION DIVISION CLAM SHELL BUCKET TRUCK ROLL-OFF TRUCK D rivers deliver on average 5,000 tons of material monthly, which equals to 60,000 tons either recycled or landfilled. Drivers travel over 250 miles a day, which equals 78,000 miles per year combined between both shifts of workers. One employee dispatching 2 to 3 Bucket Trucks & 5 to 6 Roll-Off drivers on a daily bases, but we run two different shifts throughout the week. 17 total employees working in the Collection Division. We are the largest transporter of garbage in the County.

RECYCLING DIVISION SPECIAL EVENTS RECYCLING CENTERS OTHER RECYCLING PROGRAMS Marion County offers a voluntarily recycling program which includes 18 different recycling centers throughout the un-incorporated areas of the county, which the Citys inside MC are not connected to the County. In 2007, Marion County as a total including residents and commercial businesses recycled 134,196 tons (FDEP certified numbers) (268,392,000 pounds) Total County landfilled in MC 392,130 tons. This equals out to be a 34% recycling rate for the whole County. Some acceptable recyclables are: cardboard, glass, newspaper, plastic, tin, etc.. We also offer at our centers scrap metal, yard waste, some hazardous waste (lead acid car batteries), auto oil, oil filters & textiles. These centers are lighted and staff by County personnel Special events include electronic waste collections and phone book recycling.

LITTER DIVISION Litter crew busLitter crew truckAdopt-A-Road program We offer several different types of litter programs ranging from our inmate litter program to the new weekend probation program We also offer Adopt-a-Road programs. Presently we have 40 organizations participating in this program, which equals to 80 miles four times a year litter pick up MCBCC also is a supporter of Keep Marion Beautiful

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DIVISION HHW mobile collection Leachate systemMethane Gas collection Definition of Household Hazardous Waste is: Any material that is … Toxic – Corrosive – Reactive – Irritant – all could pose a health and safety factor for both humans and the environment. Examples of some items we collect at the HHW Division are: lead acid batteries, latex paints, aerosol cans, used oil, pool chemicals, and fluorescent light bulbs to name a few. HHW Division monitors our leachate collection system and methane gas collection. They also provide ground water monitoring at County owned properties We recently started our landfill gas to energy project, which will convert methane gas into electricity to power homes. Sources say we should provide approx homes per day with GREEN ENERGY from this project and save 300,000 barrels of oil per year.

BASELINE SOLID WASTE FACILITY – Waste Facts Did you know … Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, and 7,000 gallons of water Paper products make up the largest part (approximately 40%) of our trash Each year, Americans throw away 25 trillion Styrofoam cups Only 1% of the worlds water supply is usable; 97% is the ocean and 2% is frozen In a lifetime, the average American throws away 600 times their adult weight in garbage Recycling an aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television set for three hours or light a 100 watt bulb for an entire day. A glass bottle can be recycled time and time again into another glass bottle or product, without any loss of quality. Glass is 100% recyclable.
