CyberKnife® Developed by Accuray Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine Uses microwave technology to generate photons Weightless elementary particle Used in Stereotactic Radiosurgery Non-invasive form of radiation therapy Relies on: CT scan Determine location, size, shape of tumor Radiation Tumor DNA mutations Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) Computer-controlled robotic arm Custom treatment plan

Results January 2012 – 160 person case study conducted The People’s Liberation Army 107th Hospital in China 18 people had their tumors disappear 99 exhibited tumor shrinkage 35 were unaffected 8 had tumor growth Conclusion: 73.13% effectiveness

Advantages/Disadvantages Non-invasive No recovery time Can treat tumors anywhere in body Extremely accurate (within 0.5mm of target) Insurance can cover the costs Minimal to no side effects Disadvantages: Not always effective Expensive without insurance ($12,000 for one treatment) Results take time More than one treatment may be necessary Procedure is longer than comparable treatments (60-90 mins)
