Training and Qualifications You need a Bachelor's Degree and then a Medical Degree which includes time as an intern in a hospital. Surgeons and other specialists require additional certifications which require additional training. As a medical doctor you need to attend medical school, but you can also be a doctor in research (Ph.D). To be more specific, to become a physician you must have completed four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school and another 3-8 years of an internship.

The Nature of Being A Doctor In order to be a successful physician you would first have to diagnose the patient and be able to prescribe a drug or admit to the emergency room depending on the severity of the illness. A knowledge of anatomy, chemistry and biology is a must in order to physically asses someone. Also communication skills are very important so when treating the patient nothing is left out.

Personal Traits Very important personal traits in order to become a doctor include being patient, having a jovial environment when treating someone and also being able to read body language because the person may say one thing but their body might say something else. Also another trait is communication; if you can communicate with the patient thoroughly the problem can be identified much quicker.

Trends The medical field is one job that would always be needed and there would never be too many doctors. The reason there is never an abundance of doctors is because the process of becoming one is long, stressful and has to be mistake free. Not only that but 1/3 of students after their first year of medical school drop out. This means there's always room for a doctor. Another change is more medications for different types for sickness. In the end result, it leads to an easier way to treat patients and the technology coming out is much more advanced which makes it easier to take tests on patients and find any problem quicker.

Job Availability The job availability of doctors is actually high because not too many people finish medical school when they are enrolled in it. If you become a surgeon you are at a higher chance of getting a job because not only are you certified to be a medical physician but you can perform surgery depending on what you specialize, which makes you a better candidate for a hospital. Other than that if you have completed medical school you can open your own private clinic and it’s advised to have it in urban areas or cities like New York City because the more people means a greater number of them need some type of medical assistance.

Related Occupations Other occupations that you can do other than becoming a doctor is a personal trainer which is my back up plan if I don’t end up becoming a doctor. Also a nurse is a highly chosen field if medical school doesn’t work out for someone and one more field is becoming a teacher. Most biology teachers were former medical students or aspiring doctors.

Challenges and Drawbacks One of the biggest challenges that many aspiring doctors go through is the process of becoming a doctor, which is very time consuming and difficult as well. Not only that but paying for medical school itself is a challenge because some medical schools are more expensive than some private universities, and sometimes the only way some can go to medical school is if they get a full ride. Even though the process of becoming a doctor is tough it’s still not easy being one as well. It gets stressful and tiring. The reason why is because depending on where you work you might have to work long hours and deal with ill, impatient and frustrated people.
