Chapter 7: Tracking Traits

Set up Notebook  Pg. 330  Key Idea: Family Members tend to share some of the same traits  Ch. 7 Vocabulary: Start list in NB  Engage: “It Runs in the Family”

Process & Procedure p Read letter p What are your ideas about inheritance? a. Generate 2 statements b. Share out c. Record ideas of others d. Discuss

Statement about inheritance  Inheritance is passed down from your family and looks are often inherited.  You can inherit diseases from your parents.  Which trait you receive is based on which trait is dominant and which is recessive.  You can inherit external and internal inheritance from your parents.  Traits from your parents are passed down to you.  You become male or female depending on which genes are stronger your moms or dads.  Pigeon toed.  Hair color, eye color, skin color, height are traits that can be passed down.  The way you smile can be inherited  Inheritance can be positive or negative  You can inherit your parents metabolism  Skill sets such as athleticism can be inherited  You can inherit things by body contact or needles.  Hair color and eye color  The way you stand, bone structure.  Addictive tendencies may be inherited

Discussion Questions  If you look more like one parent than the other, do you think you are more likely to inherit a trait from the parent you look more similar to?  Does a person have to exhibit a trait to pass it on?  Does a child receive equal amounts of genetic information from both parents?

Discussion Questions (cont..)  Do you think all traits are visible?  If a person has dimples do you think at least one of his or her children will inherit them?  Are some traits more common in males than females?  Are identical twins always the same sex?

Discussion Questions (cont..)  Do all organisms have the same number of chromosomes?  Do you think humans have more or less chromosomes than another organism like a dog?

Reflect & Connect  Answer questions #1-5 – COMPLETE SENTENCES  Turn in when done
