English Literature

The IGCSE English Literature programme for Years 10 and 11 will cover five terms.

Texts you will be reading:  Anita Desai’s Fasting, Feasting  Selected Poems set by Cambridge  Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar  Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey

Fasting, Feasting  This text will be studied in Term One.  We will examine  The setting of the novel  Themes, symbols and motifs  The plot  Characters and the roles they play  Literary devices and effects  Style and language

Poetry Anthology We will study 14 poems from the prescribed anthology Songs of Ourselves in Term Two. You will learn to appreciate:  The theme/s  Poetic devices  Structure  Tone/Style

More importantly  You will examine the effects of the language used;  Explore implications and develop a personal and sensitive response; and  Understand a poem in its social/historical context.

 This text will be studied in Term Three.  We will examine › The Roman form of government › The plot › Themes, symbols and motifs › Characters and the roles they play › Language used and the importance of foreshadowing
