What did the Freedmen’s Bureau set up across the South? schools

What was sharecropping? One form of agriculture that became common in the South was sharecropping, in which the landowner let the farmer work the land in return for a share of the crop.

What was the Ku Klux Klan? A secret group that deprived former slaves of their rights and tried to restore white control in the South

What did the 13th Amendment do? Abolished slavery

What did the 14th Amendment do? Made freedmen citizens

What did the 15th Amendment do? Gave freedmen the right to vote (women were excluded)

What is Impeachment? Impeachment is charging a public official with a crime. President Johnson was impeached by Congress and came within one vote of being removed from office by the Senate.

What were scalawags and carpetbaggers? Scalawags were poor white farmers in the South who supported the Radical Republicans during Reconstruction. Carpetbaggers were Northerners who came to the South to get rich during Reconstruction. Most Southerners hated them.
