The Book of Amos Amos & The Setting of The Book of Amos.

The Book of Amos Amos (burden) was from the town of “Tekoa” located about 12 miles south of Jerusalem. Amos was a shepherd and dresser of sycamore trees, Amos 7:14. Amos (from Judah) was called by God to go into Israel and prophesy against it, but was run out of Israel, Amos 7:10-13.

II Kings 14:23-29 - In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, became king in Samaria, and reigned forty-one years. 24 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD; he did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin. 25 He restored the territory of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which He had spoken through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from Gath Hepher. 26 For the LORD saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; and whether bond or free, there was no helper for Israel.

27 And the LORD did not say that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven; but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash. 28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did-his might, how he made war, and how he recaptured for Israel, from Damascus and Hamath, what had belonged to Judah- are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 29 So Jeroboam rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel. Then Zechariah his son reigned in his place. c.f. Amos 3:10-15 Amos 4:1 Amos 5:12 Amos 6:1-8 Amos 7:9 Amos 8:5-6

Amos 1:1-2 - The words of Amos, who was among the sheepbreeders of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 2 And he said: "The LORD roars from Zion, And utters His voice from Jerusalem; The pastures of the shepherds mourn, And the top of Carmel withers.“ c.f. Joel 3:16 Amos 3:4,8

Judgment against the Nations: Chapters 1-2 Judgment against Israel Chapters 3-6 Five visions concerning Israel Chapters 7-9:10 Promised restoration Chapter 9:11-15 The LORD roars Chapter 1:1-2 Judgment against the Nations: Damascus, 1:3-5 Gaza, 1:6-8 Tyre, 1:9-10 Edom, 1:11-12 Ammon, 1:13-15 Moab, 2:1-3 Judah, 2:4-5 Israel, 2:6-16

Damascus – “…Because they have threshed Gilead with implements of iron Gaza – “…Because they took captive the whole captivity To deliver them up to Edom.” 1:6-8 Tyre – “…Because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, And did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.” 1:9-10 Edom – “…Because he pursued his brother with the sword, And cast off all pity; His anger tore perpetually, And he kept his wrath forever.” 1:11-12 Ammon – “…Because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead, That they might enlarge their territory.” 1:13-15 Moab – “…Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.” 2:1-3 Judah – “… Because they have despised the law of the LORD, And have not kept His commandments. Their lies lead them astray, Lies which their fathers followed.” 2:4-5 Israel – “… Because they sell the righteous for silver, And the poor for a pair of sandals. 7 They pant after the dust of the earth which is on the head of the poor, And pervert the way of the humble. A man and his father go in to the same girl, To defile My holy name. 8 They lie down by every altar on clothes taken in pledge, And drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.” 2:6-16

Amos cries judgment against Israel Judgment against the Nations: Chapters 1-2 Judgment against Israel Chapters 3-6 Five visions concerning Israel Chapters 7-9:10 Promised restoration Chapter 9:11-15 The LORD roars Chapter 1:1-2 Amos cries judgment against Israel Chapter 3:1-15 Judgment against the Nations: Damascus, 1:3-5 Gaza, 1:6-8 Tyre, 1:9-10 Edom, 1:11-12 Ammon, 1:13-15 Moab, 2:1-3 Judah, 2:4-5 Israel, 2:6-16

Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he has caught nothing? 5 Will a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no trap for it? Will a snare spring up from the earth, if it has caught nothing at all? 6 If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it?

Amos 5:1-3 - Hear this word which I take up against you, a lamentation, O house of Israel: 2 The virgin of Israel has fallen; She will rise no more. Amos 7:1-3 - Thus the Lord GOD showed me: Behold, He formed locust swarms at the beginning of the late crop; indeed it was the late crop after the king's mowings. 2 And so it was, when they had finished eating the grass of the land, that I said: "O Lord GOD, forgive, I pray! Oh, that Jacob may stand, For he is small!“ 3 So the LORD relented concerning this. "It shall not be," said the LORD.

Amos 7:7-9 - Thus He showed me: Behold, the Lord stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand. 8 And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said: "Behold, I am setting a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore. 9 The high places of Isaac shall be desolate, And the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste. I will slay the last of them with the sword. He who flees from them shall not get away, And he who escapes from them shall not be delivered. 2 "Though they dig into hell, From there my hand shall take them; Though they climb up to heaven, From there I will bring them down; 3 And though they hide themselves on top of Carmel, From there I will search and take them; Though they hide from My sight at the bottom of the sea, From there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them; 4 Though they go into captivity before their enemies, From there I will command the sword, And it shall slay them. I
