The Birth and Childhood Born on January 17,1942 in Louisville, Kentucky Muhammad Ali real name was Cassius Clay Jr. Cassius parents were Cassius Clay Sr. and Odessa Grady Clay He’s bicycle was stolen and when he was 12 and from their he began to take boxing lessons so he could beat up the people who stole it.
The Beginning of Ali’s career In 1956 Cassius wins the novice Golden Gloves Championship In 1959 Cassius wins another championship and this one is the Golden Gloves tournament of champions In 1960 he won a spot on the US Olympic team and won the gold medal for boxing the 1960 Olympics
Being a Champion conversation to Islam and change of name On February 25, 1964, Cassius Clay fought Charles “Sonny” Liston for the heavyweight title By the 7th round Liston was severely hurt and exhausted and refused to continue fighting. The day after the championship fight with Liston, Muhammad Ali publicly announced his conversion to Islam and change his name to Muhammad Ali
Banned from boxing for draft invasion After the Liston fight Muhammad Ali won every fight and became one of the most famous boxers ever In 1967 Muhammad Ali received a draft noticed he refused it was fine 10,000 and 5 years in jail but he remained out of bail while he appealed He was then strip from his heavyweight title and banned from boxing for about 3 years
The comeback and end of his career On September 2, 1970, Muhammad Ali fought in his first comeback fight on October 26, 1970 against Jerry Quarry in Atlanta, Georgia. He beat jerry quarry by the 4th round and was given a chance to win the title back from Joe Frazier He lost the fight; Joe Frazier however lost the title to George Forman and Ali won the title from Forman four years later Muhammad Ali won plenty of fights but retired on June 26, 1979
The legacy and culture he left for boxing Muhammad Ali left he legacy of boxing behind He came up with the “rope to rope” move and he also left a form of boxing where the hands come down to your waist and just dodge and weave all the punches
