South Gloucestershire Labour Market

Credit crunch! The global economy is still facing unprecedented challenges. We are undergoing a period of re-adjustment after 15 years of growth in the UK economy People need to think about the long term and plan ahead

Employers in South Gloucestershire Question: Which is the largest employer in South Gloucestershire? Answer: South Gloucestershire Council. The range of jobs is enormous… accountants; builders; childcare workers; environmental scientists; housing managers; horticulturalists; office staff; teachers and traffic engineers etc…

Jobs in South Gloucestershire There are ten companies in South Gloucestershire that each employ over 1,000 people. Another large employer is the health service. The health service doesn’t just employ doctors and nurses – they have jobs for: ambulance drivers; builders; caterers; engineers; lT workers; laboratory staff; receptionists; porters and so on. Other major local employers include: Airbus UK; Asda; AXA; Hewlett Packard; Ministry of Defence; Orange; Rolls Royce; Royal Mail and the University of the West of England.

Jobs in South Gloucestershire The new Bristol and Bath Science Park at Emersons Green will house specialist science and technology companies. The completed development is expected to create 6,000 new highly skilled jobs in aerospace, defence, digital technology and biotechnology along with associated support opportunities. There are also lots of jobs with smaller companies. ln total more people work for smaller companies than the large ones.

What do employers want? Avon Valley Precision Engineering – Clark Iles Production Manager When I interview for an apprentice I look for a good understanding of maths, and English; for example reading and following instructions. The young person has to be economic even as a trainee. Parents can support the young worker by ensuring they take a responsible attitude to work in respect to time keeping and attendance.

What do employers want? Care Home Manager Kingswood. I look at qualifications - but this is not the most important consideration. I look particularly for; Previous experience Good communication skills - ease of talking to myself and residents. Motivation - the fact that they really want the job. For example, the person has taken time to find out about the industry and the employer. Enthusiasm and honesty at the interview. There is the expectation that this would be transferred into the work place.

Employers want people who can… Read, write and use numbers - nearly every job involves English and Maths. Work in a team – as well as by themselves. Solve problems. Use lT. Explain what they mean and ask for help when they need it.

Where will the jobs be in the future? More jobs: Business Caring Culture, media and sports Health service Retail management Sales and customer services Science and technology Skilled construction Fewer jobs: Agriculture Low cost manufacturing Machine operators Routine office jobs Unskilled labouring

Summary: key messages about the labour market Stay in education/learning for as long as possible. The growth of technical and skilled jobs is leading to a need for a more educated and qualified workforce. Learning throughout life is essential. ‘Key skills’ are important. The number of routine, unskilled jobs is decreasing. We work in a global economy. The work force is more mobile. Young people may need to be willing to travel to get the right job.
