A Working Definition for CI CyberInfrastructure: A highly reliable, common, national network of resources that provides access to and integrates shared repositories for data, models, and tools with shared facilities for experimentation and computation; and that supports data acquisition, analysis, searching, and information extraction; real- time simulation; and distributed collaboration.

A Classification for CI Investments Functional Systems Engineering (CI-FSE): operations research, networks, transparency, security, and role of industry. Physical Assets (CI-P): including compute resources, networks, repositories, deployed sensor systems, instruments. Software Assets (CI-S): assets that make it possible to use the resources and assets in CI-P. –(CI-SN): Domain-Neutral. –(CI-SS): Domain-Specific. Enabling Research (CI-R): activities that underpin new capabilities and new uses for CI. –(CI-RS): New software tools and capabilities. –(CI-RP): New technologies that enable CI applications or underpin new capabilities. Education and Community-Building (CI-E): activities that prepares individuals and their communities of practice to make the fullest use of CI in research and education. Social, Economic and Technological Dimensions (CI-SET): activities that generate new knowledge about the social, economic, ethical and technological implications of CI, and new insights into human capabilities relating to the design and operation of CI.
