Leadership & Governance NSS workstream Our vision is that leadership and governance are at the heart of organisational effectiveness, and that the success and sustainability of third sector organisations depends on how they are led and governed. Our mission is to build the capacity of support providers to develop, promote, and champion excellence in leadership and governance practices in the third sector. NCVO, ACEVO and CSC

Leadership & Governance Aim 2.  Leadership Development: Support providers will be better equipped with new models and resources to assist third sector organisations to overcome barriers in accessing leadership development

Barriers to Leadership Development for community groups Lack of recognition of leadership – cultural, language, ideological and personal Context Time Cost

Key Influences Focus on concept of collective leadership rather than individual leaders Community development values – a bottom up approach Paulo Friere – recognition of existing leadership skills and abilities and need to start where people are already at Saul Alinsky – focus on leadership to achieve social change Contributions from Coalition members inc ECA

Issues during development Challenge existing perceptions of leadership Need to be able to describe how collective leadership in community sector actually works – focus is on trustees/management committees Articulate why leadership is important for the community sector Develop a practical programme for support provider organisations to support development of the above leadership

A new model for the community sector Toolkit for using with community groups Training programme for development workers

Understanding Leadership To liberate leadership, first you have to understand it Explore views and experience of leadership Challenge jaded assumptions Explore the meaning of leadership

The new model – four Essential Elements

Applying Principles - leadership in the community sector means; Empowerment: being participative being accountable enabling others building a vision Taking action for social change: tackling exclusion building bridges taking a stand acting with enterprise

Applying Principles - Exploring values as the basis for motivations and actions Understanding the principles that underpin leadership Using the principles as guidance on how to do leadership Adopting the principles as a framework for leadership

Liberating Leadership toolkit To accompany the training programme An introduction to the new model and how to use with groups Includes 29 participatory tools to use with groups or an open workshop Further resources and reading Website with discussion forums and additional downloads

Liberating Leadership training programme For development workers of support provider organisations 3 day programme (2 day residential plus 1 day) Introduction to Liberating Leadership model and toolkit Try out using some of the tools that have been developed Feedback session on using the tools with groups where they can learn from each other’s experience Equip them with a model and resources to organise a short workshop about leadership or work 1:1 with a group

Progress to date SKiLD (NAVCA) delivering the training programmes 2 successful programmes so far and another next week Limited impact on groups as DW still working out how to use tools

What Next? Launching Liberating Leadership – 20th Nov National training programmes planned for Nov, Jan & Feb Starting to plan regional training programmes for 2010 Partnering with Coalition members to deliver training programmes to particular sub-sector support providers where appropriate Interested in ideas about how to develop Liberating Leadership for the future
