Superconducting Undulator Workshop Rutherford Appleton Laboratory 28 th & 29 th April 2014 Jim Clarke STFC Daresbury Laboratory

Welcome to RAL

STFC funds world class and world-leading research – both curiosity driven and application led science This research takes place in University groups, at STFC sites/laboratories, and in international organisations Science and Technology Facilities Council

UK Astronomy Technology Centre Edinburgh, Scotland Polaris House Swindon, Wiltshire Chilbolton Observatory Stockbridge, Hampshire Daresbury Laboratory Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus Warrington, Cheshire Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell Science and Innovation Campus Didcot, Oxfordshire

Technology to underpin science Developing and delivering innovative technologies in STFC laboratories and in collaboration with University groups Key Technology Strengths o Accelerator technologies o Instrumentation o Detectors and Sensors o Data Acquisition and Processing Systems o Microelectronics design o Micro/nano technology o High Performance Computing o Engineering technology centres based at Harwell and Daresbury Science and Innovation Campuses o Collaborative efforts

STFC Facilities – driving scientific research Neutron Sources Providing powerful insights into key areas of energy, biomedical research, climate, environment and security High Power Lasers Providing applications on bioscience and nanotechnology and demonstrating laser driven fusion as a future source of sustainable, clean energy Light Sources Providing new breakthroughs in medicine, environmental and materials science, engineering, electronics and cultural heritage

Workshop Aims & Motivation PM Undulator technology continues to advance, with shorter periods, smaller gaps, and new permanent magnet materials being implemented at advanced accelerator driven light sources around the world. Superconducting technology still appears to hold a significant advantage over even cryogenic permanent magnet based devices. The recent successful installation and operation of an SCU on the APS is another significant step forwards. But, progress with SCUs is not as fast as we would like – are there particular issues that are holding us up or do we all tackle different problems?

Workshop Aims & Motivation Opportunity to share news and information about the status and progress of our projects and to discuss the ongoing challenges that we all face. Try to achieve a consensus on list of uncertainties – What is holding SCUs back? – Could we work more closely together as a community to push SCUs forward as a technology? – Do Free Electron Lasers provide different challenges to storage rings? Agree any action items

Output of the Workshop We will write up a Report of the Workshop, summarising all of the points raised, consensus on key areas to tackle and any actions agreed We hope this will be a useful document to the community

Dinner Tonight Coach provided to Cosener’s House, Abingdon at 19:00 from R18 Return coach to Ridgeway House at 22.00

Thanks Thanks to Sue, Marie & Vicky for all the help with the organisation Thanks to Marie for support during the workshop Thanks to Tom, Soren, Sara, and Yury for helping put the Programme together Many thanks to you all for attending
