Progression in Calculations

The New National Curriculum It goes further than the previous curriculum. Practice is key! There is a renewed emphasis on problem solving. As you’ve probably heard, calculators will be banned in the KS2 SAT from Levels are going.

New curriculum is split into domains. Number (place value, calculations, FDP), measurement, geometry (properties of shape, position and direction), statistics, ratio and proportion and algebra. Teachers are geared up to teach to the new expectations. All pupils will follow the progression of methods within the following documents.

* Number facts and mental calculation skills underpin any written methods. * Progression is a continuous flow of stages (not age related expectations) to never inhibit the progress of pupils. 4 Stages of Calculation: *Mental *Informal *Expanded *Efficient *Note that mental and informal methods will continue all the way through primary Maths. Progression in Calculation

Let’s have a look at the progression document…

* Count with your child * Play number games * Involve your child in shopping activities * Involve your child when taking measurements or weighing items * Take note of numbers in real life e.g. telephone numbers, bus numbers, lottery numbers etc * Give your child opportunities to use money to shop, check change etc *Talk about the mathematics in football e.g.. How many points does your favourite team need to catch the next team in the division? * When helping your child calculate use the method that they have been taught. How you can help…

All key documents can be downloaded from the school website. Thank you for listening. Any questions?
