War on Paraguay PhotoLogos The logical appeal in this picture is the government don’t always do what they say there going to. The U.S government sit up a fleet and a small army and sailed to Paraguay but they didn’t even fight they instead resolved things peaceful and had champagne with the dictator. The appeal is watch out for the government they can trick you.

War on Paraguay PhotoEthos The ethical appeal in this picture is weather or not the government was right in not going to war with Paraguay. There was a n American life lost because of the paraguay but at the same time does two wrongs make a right?

War on Paraguay PhotoPathos The emotional appeal in this picture is to make the people angry. People were all expecting justice and revenge but all they got was a champagne party. In one picture it shows how people wanted the war to end and how they expected it to but in the other picture it says what really happens and the other picture shows what really happened its showed as everybody being happy and making toast which makes people angry cause they wanted the first picture.

War on Paraguay This photo is in black and white and depicts two scenes from a war that wasn’t really a war at all. Its shows a picture of an American solider holding a gun to the dictator of Paraguay’s nose and has the title “How people thought the war would end.” and the other says “How it really ended.” Also in the back ground of the first picture it shows American soldiers with the flag and on the other side it shows American soldiers and the dictator having a party with champagne and are toasting to their peaceful resolution. Also the dictator has his nose shaded darker to emphasis “brown nosing” he was scared and started sucking up to the Americans.

War on Paraguay Questions What is the purpose of this image? Why do you think people might think when viewing this cartoon? If the government did this today would you be angry? Why did the author make this picture in black and white? How could time alter the historical interpretation of this picture?

War on Paraguay Answers The purpose of this picture is to show how the government is and to anger American citizens. I think people viewing this cartoon would be angry and realize the government isn’t as big and bad as everyone thought. Yes and no just like I said in my response to the before question id be mad the government got everybody all worked up but also glad they could be civil. He made it black and white so you had to draw your own conclusion about what was in the picture like the stuff laying on the ground. Time could change it because peoples views change and people would question weather or not it has historical importance since there was only one life lost (still to many) and no real war.

War on Paraguay Artist : John McLenan Time period : 1858 to 1859 Publication : Harper’s weekly (April ) History : Paraguay wouldn’t allow U.S to send a scientific expedition to the Parana river and fired upon a U.S boat and killed a U.S solider also the U.S citizens who lived in Paraguay wasn’t granted the same rights as Paraguay citizens and the dictator was known to ransack their houses and take what he wanted. Analysis of title : The title is meant to be ironic because their was no real war on Paraguay

War on Paraguay Work cited (artist) John McLenan, Harper’s weekly Robert C. Kennedy (wrote editorial that goes along with picture)
