Presentation transcript:

Thermal Energy

1.Thermal Energy is the vibration or movement of atoms and molecules. 2.All matter has thermal energy because the atoms are always moving.

Thermal Energy 3. Solids have the least thermal energy, then liquids, and gases have the most thermal energy.

Heat 4. When two objects touch, thermal energy is transferred from one to the other. 5. The amount of energy transferred is called heat.

Heat 6. Heat (or thermal energy) always moves from the hotter object to the colder.

Check For Understanding When you put ice into a glass of water. What energy transfer occurs to make the water cold?

3 Forms of Heat Transfer

Thermal energy always moves from hot to cold or hotter to cooler substances. The 3 ways heat is transferred: – Conduction – Convection – Radiation

CONDUCTION The transfer of energy between direct contact of molecules.

CONVECTION The transfer of energy by the bulk movement of matter. Energy moves from one location to another, carrying energy with them.

RADIATION Transfer of heat energy through the form of waves. Energy that travels by radiation is often called radiant energy.
