What are Possessive Pronouns? Possessive pronouns are used to show ownership. They indicate who the owner of a certain thing is. They describe the number and gender of the noun. When they accompany and describe a noun they are also known as Possessive Adjectives.

How to use a Possessive Pronoun Possessive pronouns are used instead of nouns, and can also be used alone, without the noun they are referring to. When they replace a noun and are used alone, they are accompanied by definite articles (except if they come after verb To Be) or by the neutral article and have masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms.

Examples of PP’s El coche es mío. The car is mine. El coche es tuyo. The car is yours. El coche es suyo. The car is his / hers/ theirs / yours (formal). El coche es nuestro. The car is ours. OJO!!The possessive pronouns are used without the article, because they come after the verb to be.

…Examples Mi casa es verde./ La mia es verde. My house is green./ Mine is green. La tuya es roja. Yours is red. La suya es amarilla. His/her/your (formal) house is yellow. La mía es roja. Mine is red. La Nuestra es blanca. Our house is white.

Facts! Possessive Pronouns agree in gender and number with the possessed thing, not with the owner. In Spanish it is not necessary to use possessive pronouns before body parts. Ex: Me rompi el brazo. (I broke my arm). You can see that there is no possessive pronoun along with the body’s part.
