 Without motivation goals would not be achieved,  Potentially causes employees to work hard thus leading to high productivity and improved work quality,  Helps keep employees committed to maintaining high levels of performance, Why is Motivation Important

Basic Theories of Motivation HerzbergMaslow X/Y Manager

Herzberg’s Theory  Developed in the 1959 by F. Herzberg  States certain factors cause job satisfaction, while others can cause dissatisfaction.  Motivators give positive satisfaction, arising from intrinsic conditions of the job  Hygiene factors do not give positive satisfaction, though dissatisfaction results from their absence. These are extrinsic to the work

 Herzberg’s theory is an easy to understand model, ‘without the base being solid the rocket will not take off effectively’  Empirical evidence confirms that the motivation- hygiene theory does work within the work place  It can be easily applied to a team of people Why Use Herzberg’s Theory

 Used to identify why a team is not performing well  Improve an existing team that is e.g. doing the minimal required and nothing more  Improve a teams moral  Potentially improve teams alignment with organisational goals Herzberg’s Theory in Practice

 Currently not needed in my own team  Has been useful within my department  It established that the hygiene factors were all met and that several motivation factors are already in place Personal use of Herzberg’s Theory

 Motivation is important  There are several theories of motivation to chose from  Herzberg’s theory has been shown to work in the workplace  If needed, I would personally use/suggest utilising the Herzberg theory of motivation Summary
