What is investigative reporting? “ It is the reporting, through one ’ s own work product and initiative, matters of importance which some persons or organizations wish to keep secret. ” The Reporter’s Handbook (1983)

Three requirements Reporting based on one ’ s own initiative Matter of importance Others wish to keep it a secret

Investigative roles Watchdog –Keep an eye of government, business and other powerful institutions

Investigative roles Explanatory –Tell how complex systems work or fail to work. –Relatively new role.

Investigative roles Deeper meaning –Go beyond what people are saying. –Make part of your routine

Invisible Web The Visible Web is made up of the typical results you see in Google, etc. The Invisible Web includes searchable databases that Google and search engines can ’ t find. Good for finding data on your beat. Some estimate the Invisible Web to be much larger that the Visible Web.
