Closure Lesson Set Think back to a lesson you’ve taught or seen taught. How was the lesson concluded? How often have you seen a lesson close with …. “Any questions?”

Closure Lesson Objective At the end of this lesson, you will demonstrate understanding of the use of closure by: Writing a definition of closure Listing the (4) critical elements of closure Giving (2) examples of eliciting closure

Closure Closure is what the instructor does to bring the lesson to an appropriate or logical conclusion BY Giving the students an opportunity to pull together the things they have just learned.

Closure Two Parts of Closure: Involvement of the Learner Summarization of the Learning

Closure It is a planned experience by the instructor, stated as such in the objective. The student should have learned what was stated in the objective. Allows the instructor to verify whether or not the learning has been achieved.

Closure 4 Critical elements of closure  Summary by the learner, not the teacher  Uses active participation  Learning must be relevant to the objective, not just related  Must focus on the learning, not on the activity

Closure Reasons for Using Closure Makes the learning more effective by assisting the instructor to monitor and adjust the learning …. and to select a learning at the appropriate level. Aids in promoting a higher rate and degree of learning.

Closure Reasons for Using Closure It helps the student focus on what was just learned. Helps instructor recognize the level of understanding by the students.

Closure When To Use Anytime, but always to end a lesson After an important piece of learning … intermediate closure As a set … a bridge to the next learning

Closure Closure generally occurs at the end of a lesson. However, if a lesson is complex with multiple parts, it is usually a good idea to use closure at the end of a part or combined parts. Closure may occur simultaneously with independent practice.

Closure Closure can be accomplished through: Instructor Summary Student Summary Student demonstration Written exercise

Closure Ways to Elicit Closure “Summarize in your own words” “Think of the results” “Tell me what you have learned” “Explain in your own words what we’ve done so far” “Explain what you can do today that you couldn’t do yesterday”

Closure Lesson Set After teaching Law 2, what’s the next essential element for a soccer game? …. Number of Players This closes one subject and transitions the learning and allerts the students as to what should be coming next.

Closure Oftentimes a lesson ends with Poor Closure: “Any Questions?” ….. “Understand?” Instructor needs to ask specific and pertinent questions relative to the learning. Never leave the lesson open- ended …. such as stated above.

Closure Lesson Assignments Write down and bring to the in-class sessions the following: Your understanding of what closure is. A list of the (4) critical elements of closure. Two (2) specific examples of eliciting closure for the teaching of some aspect of Law 12.
