I. The Mess (Habakkuk’s complaint)

Sin everywhere… People out of control; wicked surround righteous (3-4) Even worse, God doesn’t care (2)

I. The Mess (Habakkuk’s complaint) II. The Message (God’s comeback)

God is doing something Armies of Babylon are on the move  Defeated Assyria  Defeated Assyria, 612 BC  Defeated Egypt  Defeated Egypt, 605 BC Who is next? Babylon’s assault, Hab.1:5-11 Cure worse than the disease! Habakkuk’s astonishment, Hab.1:12-2:1 How can God fellowship ungodly?

How can God use Babylon to punish Judah? 1. Political 2. Physical (death; exile) 3. Social 4. Economic (ch.3) 5. Spiritual (1:16-17) Judah worships idols too. Babylon is not worse than Judah!

I. The Mess (Habakkuk’s complaint) III. The Meaning (God’s clarification, 2:4) II. The Message (God’s comeback)

goodcruel chosen How can good God use cruel Babylon to destroy chosen people? Not because Babylon is righteous temporary instrument of God’s judgment Because Babylon is powerful: temporary instrument of God’s judgment Book of Judges Assyria (Is.10) God will judge Babylon (2:6-19)

Woes Against Babylon (Hab.2:6-19) *God is great, 2:4* 1. Woe to the greedy nation, Woe for misplaced trust, Woe for violence and injustice, *God is vindicated, 2:14* 4. Woe for shameful mistreatment, Woe for idolatry, *God is awesome, 2:20*

Trust Me Habakkuk’s education: Trust Me (2:4) 4 Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith. 5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man, And he does not stay at home. Because he enlarges his desire as hell, And he is like death, and cannot be satisfied, He gathers to himself all nations And heaps up for himself all peoples. 1. ‘Un-faith’…faith…‘unfaith’ 2. Not begins w. faith, or part-time faith

Faith in Habakkuk Faith does not blame God’s work Faith in Habakkuk 1. Faith does not blame God’s work Children of Israel, Ex.14:12 If God must immediately destroy evil, He must rid world of people. Blaming God makes you evil. you Should He start with you? If God must immediately destroy evil, He must rid world of people. Blaming God makes you evil. you Should He start with you?

Faith does not doubt God’s ways 1. Faith does not blame God’s work 2. Faith does not doubt God’s ways Ex.14:12 Job 21:7 Isa.55:8-9 Canaan’s sins Egypt insulated Israel from Canaan’s sins thankful Pharaoh’s oppression should have made them thankful faith: God’s rescue should have strengthened their faith: “What a God!” Canaan’s sins Egypt insulated Israel from Canaan’s sins thankful Pharaoh’s oppression should have made them thankful faith: God’s rescue should have strengthened their faith: “What a God!”

Faith does not doubt God’s wisdom 1. Faith does not blame God’s work 2. Faith does not doubt God’s ways 3. Faith does not doubt God’s wisdom “God, you don’t know what you are doing!” Jonah Peter (Mt.16:21-22) Abraham, Ro.4:20-21 Christian, Ro.11:33-34

Faith does not doubt God’s word 1. Faith does not blame God’s work 2. Faith does not doubt God’s ways 3. Faith does not doubt God’s wisdom 4. Faith does not doubt God’s word His judgment against Israel did not cancel His promises to Abraham Israel’s sins posed greater threat than Babylon’s armies. Exile produced faithful remnant.

N.T. fulfillment righteousness 1. Ro.1:17, the just (righteousness of God): 36x in Romans. 2:26; 8:4 2. Ga.3:11, shall live (not just physical deliverance, but spiritual. V.12; 2:19 3. Hb.10:38, by faith Another army would soon be on the march; Christians must focus on heaven. Like Habakkuk, Hebrews begins w. a sigh for sin, ends w. a song of salvation

Prophet’s change of heart Hab.3:16-19 Though my 401-k is lost, the banks crash, social security collapses, insurance company folds, business fails, can’t find a job, food is scarce, and our enemies are planning an attack... the Lord still sits on His throne. I rejoice.
