JAIME ACEVEDO P.3 Chapter 3 Putting down roots: Opportunity and oppression in colonial society

Colonial Family In Colonial family’s the father was the one who made all the decisions and had all the household power However women also had the ability to work with their husbands, something that would later be taken away Nuclear Family’s where the most common during this time especially in new England colonies.

Colonial family cont. New Englanders made growth possible in the colonies, this was due to good health in new England colonies and similar living conditions when compared to Europe. New Englanders made having grandparents possible due to high life expectancy. In Marriages the man brought the land and the women was to bring half of what that land was worth in money. These family’s would usually grow crops and they had to grow more than they consumed so that they could establish a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Towns Towns were collections of nuclear family’s and not individuals Due to this towns adapted a kinship like society in regards to strong family’s Education systems where required in towns depending on how many family’s lived in it  15-elementary school  100’s-advanced grammar school The family was responsible for teaching their children about religion

Towns cont. Rich and strong family’s would usually rule, however being rich was simply not enough in order to be in this kinship like society you also had to of high social status Due to the large gap between the rich and the poor the government made laws limiting the amount of jewelry people could wear. Children would serve as apprentices regardless of rich or poor decent.

Chesapeake The Chesapeake was a colonial region with an incredibly high mortality rate Due to this mortality rate the male to female ratio was altered dramatically since women would usually die before having children. Here it was more common to have individuals living than nuclear family’s. It was relatively easy for women to get married here because of the high amounts of single men. It was believed that the high mortality rate was due to water contamination

Chesapeake cont. People who had a successful harvest in this region planted tobacco Rich->freemen->servants->slaves No schools in this region because of high mortality rate, instead parents sent their children to other places like England to study.

Slaves 1619-First slaves arrived at Virginia Creole languages were formed among the slaves with a mix of the English language and their native language Slaves were not as important towards the beginning of slavery in America but as time progressed they became a necessary labor source. This was due to servants becoming harder to get and the fact that servants only served for a limited amount of time.

Slaves Cont. Stono rebellion- Local slaves formed an uprising around 150 slaves participated in killing their white masters and raided an armory. They were eventually killed by local militia. Slaves children where automatically slaves regardless of the status of the father.

King and money The colonies were left alone until the restoration of Charles II, which wanted more money and believed that the answer was the colonies During this time laws on the colonies started to get tighter Mercantilism was created in order to supply the motherland with money through the navigation acts English also wanted to exclude the Dutch from the American market, this was due to their recent war status Ships could not trade in American markets unless they were built in England or the colonies and had at least 75% English people populating the ship. Certain goods could only be traded with England; Forcing Americans to have to lower their prices for certain goods.

What Basically happened with the King and colonies I want more money!!!! But how? Colony Parliament+Charles 2nd

Rebellions and New Rulers Nathaniel Bacon  Formed local militia to fight off Indians after local government authorities refused to fight against the Indians. Burned Jamestown to the ground, showed the government a little taste of the peoples true power. James II  English king who rose to power and appointed Sir Edmund Andros as a royal governor of Boston, was a terrible leader, he crushed the local economy by enforcing all of the navigation acts, made local gatherings illegal, collected extra taxes, and turned the courts against the people. As a result of James II being deposed William and Mary took control and got rid of the Andros government.

Rebellions and New Rules cont. William and Mary Made a Bill of Rights available to all Freemen, guaranteeing some of their rights regardless of the situation. Jacob Leisler  Was a Dutch elite. With the glorious revolution he made a militia and took the local fort in the name of William and Mary. Soon he was told to surrender his power by Henry slaughter a royal governor, he however refused and was killed.
