1 What is Web site Accessibility & its benefits

Up to 20% of Americans have some kind of disability. The major kinds that affect web use include: Visual – blind, low vision, color-blind Hearing – deafness Motor – inability to use a mouse, slow response time, limited fine motor Cognitive – includes learning disabilities, unable to focus Accessible design benefits everyone! -Personal preference -Older technology -Slow connection speeds -Newer wireless technology Web accessibility is important not only because your content will reach a wider range of audience, but also because correcting web accessibility issues have secondary benefits such as cleaner and more semantic code

Usability Although often lumped together, accessibility is not the same as usability Accessibility is about ensuring that all users can access all it’s services & content Usability is ensuring that the process of accessing services & content is as intuitive & efficient as possible

The Firefox Accessibility Extension is a Firefox toolbar that allows you to inspect every aspect of a web page to determine its accessibility. A helpful toolbar feature is the Text Equivalents menu which allows you to generate lists of elements such as images and links to see whether each are standards-compliant It allows the user to quickly assess the accessibility of a given Web page, with functions for testing the accessibility of the page's individual elements The Toolbar uses the qualifiers Pass,Fail, Warning, and Check to describe the accessibility of each element.
