Language and Literacy Levels across the Australian Curriculum: EALD students Module 1.1 Introduction Slide 1 The writing of the Language and Literacy Levels was a collaborative effort with the EALD team providing extensive input to the writer Bronwyn Custance. This process meant continuity with other projects and the benefit of experience and knowledge of an expert group. There was also a diverse reference group representing all sectors and jurisdictions. In Term 4 2013, the Consultation Draft was revised by the writer and a new reference group. Changes were based upon feedback from the field and a revision of the Australian Curriculum General Capability Literacy Continuum. This revised version of the Levels is now in use and schools should no longer use the 2013 Consultation Draft Levels nor should they continue to use any of the 2013 support materials (Moderated Evidence, Professional Learning modules and Recording and Tracking for Learning Resource) which were removed from the EALD Program website in December 2013. The Language and Literacy Levels across the Australian Curriculum: EALD students will be referred to as the Language and Literacy Levels or the Levels in this presentation.

Level 4 describes the level of language and literacy expected at the end of Reception. Levels 5 – 14, each describe one year’s expected progression to be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Australian Curriculum. As you can see (click) an Early Years learner may be anywhere between Levels 1 to 6 A Primary Years learner may be anywhere between Levels 1- 9 A Middle Years learner may be anywhere between Levels 1 -13 A Senior Years learner may be anywhere between Levels 1 - 14 EALD learners will be at different points on the Levels because they vary greatly in their English language development and proficiency. The register continuum Language and Literacy Levels across the Australian Curriculum: EALD Students Background explains: The register continuum The movement from ‘spoken-like’ (everyday, informal) to ‘written-like” (technical, formal) language can be seen as moving along a Register Continuum. Relationship between Levels, Year Level and Register Continuum Through descriptions and examples of language and vocabulary, the Language and Literacy Levels show the gradual and continual shift in language across the register continuum expected at each year level. This diagram shows Literacy at the centre with the overarching elements of Comprehending and Composing Texts and the elements of Text Knowledge, Grammar Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Visual Knowledge. The overarching element of Comprehending texts has not been included in the Levels because the emphasis in the Levels is on largely on written language. In the Levels, Visual knowledge has been incorporated into Text knowledge. .

Layout of Language and Literacy Levels Knowledge Language item Benchmarks from AC Literacy Continuum Slide 12 Before we do the activity let’s look at this slide to become familiar with the layout of each page in the Levels.   At the top of the first column is the name of the Knowledge. In this case it is Grammar Knowledge. Below that is the Element. In this case Sentence structure. Beneath that are the language items: simple, compound and complex. At the bottom of this column are benchmarks from the AC Literacy Continuum that relate to year levels aligned to the Levels on the page. The other columns on the page are where teachers will find descriptions and examples of the language items at each Level. Now we will start Activity 1. Activity 1 Distribute columns from the Levels, Activity 1page 2. Direct participants to work in small groups to put the columns in the correct sequence from Levels 7-10. After a few minutes, distribute copies of the full page, Activity 1page 3 for them to check against their effort. Ask how they were able to do it (eg progression in stems, examples of conjunctions, examples of conjunctions in use)? Ask if each column describes a year’s worth of teaching and learning about compound and complex sentences.

Language and Literacy Levels across the Australian Curriculum: EALD Students Each year the Levels document needs to be used by teachers to assign Levels to students’ sets of evidence before the term 3 census to attract EALD funding to the school for the following year. The funding enables intervention to be put into place for EALD students. The Levels EDSAS data allows schools to prioritise this intervention. The Levels can also be used to inform teaching and learning and monitor student progress. Slide 16 Read dot points. Take final comments or questions.
