Mathematics Curriculum Proposal Transitioning to Iowa Core

Why Are We Changing Common Core Standards for Mathematics adopted by Iowa July 2010 Full implementation, grades 9-12, required by July 1, 2012 K-8 implementation ALL STUDENTS receive core instruction

Context – How does IOWA compare? A new reality is beginning to sweep across Iowa and the nation. There’s a growing understanding that big changes are going to be needed in education for Iowa students to be successful learners, earners and citizens in the 21st century. “It’s not just the rest of the nation that Iowa’s kids have to compete with now. It’s the rest of the world,” said Iowa’s incoming director of education, Jason Glass..” SAI Report, February 2011, p. 1 4

Math or Geometry 11 th Gr. Math or Algebra II 12 th Gr. Math or Pre Calculus, Cal The work will begin here where the largest shift in content needs to be addressed. Work in K-5 and will follow

14 The Challenges …What? The Math Common Core includes: 1. Some content at different grade levels 2. Some mathematical language that may be new or unfamiliar to teachers 3. Mastery vs. Spiral 4. Significant advancement of some topics to earlier grades. Content not repeated Tracking eliminated except acceleration Success the first time Students expected to advance in mathematics Teachers will need opportunities to study, discuss, and plan for the changes included in the Core. Students will need support during transition

The Challenges…So What? Do most 7 th graders have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills required to successfully master the new 8 th math standards (formerly Algebra I content)? Do most 8 th graders have the pre-requisite knowledge and skills required to successfully master the new 9 th grade math standards? Are most teachers familiar with and/or ready to teach the new 7 th, 8 th, and 9 th grade math standards successfully to all students? 15

The Challenges…So What? Since the answers to these questions are NO then a transition plan needs to be developed to bridge the skill and knowledge gap to more readily ensure student and teacher success. 16

How Do We Proceed? 1.Option 1 – Cognitive Tutor 2.Option 2 - Design Units to Meet Common Core 3.Option 3 – EdTech Grant 17

Option 1: Cognitive Tutor Software Screenshot Sample Text

Option 1 Cognitive Tutor 19 6 th Grade7 th Grade8 th Grade9 th Grade New Courses supported with texts and software, content aligned to Iowa Common Core. 8 th Grade (current content) Algebra I (current content) New 8 th Grade Math Algebra I (current content) New Algebra I/9 th Grade Math Information Sheets Applications Due April 30 Initial Training July 18-21, 2011, Nov. 7-8, 2011 and April 25, 2012 Student assessment review meetings quarterly Coaching support throughout the year

Currently, AEA9 districts utilizing Cognitive Tutor implement with great variance. Recommendations by Carnegie Learning: 50 hours of computer time (practice) Mixed ability classrooms Collaborative learning emphasis 20

E2T2 Support of Cognitive Tutor for School Year Implement both classroom and software components with fidelity Dates for training – July 18-21, 2011 – Nov. 7-8, 2011 – April 25, 2012 Coaching and Quarterly Data Meetings 21

Questions

Dates 7 th Grade Teachers expected to attend: June 27-30, 2011 July , 2011 Oct , 2011 April 9-10, 2012 Coaching support throughout the year Option of additional transition topic workshops

What Will It Look Like Scope and Sequence Unpack the Standards – write learning targets Identify Gaps Create Transition Lessons Utilize Practice Standards Teaching through Inquiry and CRA model Reaching struggling learners Assessment

Questions

Option 3 – EdTech Grant 1.Digital course content aligned to Iowa Core in multiple content areas will be available in the fall, notification of opportunity March. 2.Support for one to one schools 3.Participation requires commitment to – Use of materials/course work – Use of blended delivery – Participation in a Community of Practice – Training April 26-27, – Strong recommendation to take two online courses to learn how to teach online prior to fall FY2011. – Course titles » Technology for Online/Blended Learning » Facilitating Online/Blended Learning – Buck Institute for Project Based Learning– Implementing Social Studies Teachers » June 22-24, 2011 in Coralville and June 28-30, 2011 in Adel These sessions will target implementing Social Studies teachers 27

Additional Opportunities April 18, 2011 from 8:30 – 11:30 AM April 27, 2011 from 8:30 – 11:30 AM

Now What Option 1: Cognitive Tutor Applications are due April 30, 2011 Option 2: Design Units form due April 30, 2011 Option 3: No support from MBAEA. Nancy Movall from Grant Wood AEA is contact person. Registration links (Options 1 & 2) will be available mid-May for teachers to sign up individually.
