CLASSIFICATION OF SKILLS AS LEVEL REVISION PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS

WHY DO WE CLASSIFY MOVEMENT SKILLS? Generalise across groups of skills, apply major concepts, theories and principles of learning Easier identification of practice conditions Enables the coach to teach them correctly Timing and type of instruction can then be clarified

CONTINUUM A Continuum is an imaginary line between two extremes A Continuum is a scale A Continuum can be used to see that skills have characteristics to a greater or lesser degree A Continuum allows you to place skills between two given extremities according to how far they match the analysis criteria being applied

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS 1 Large muscle movements Small muscle movements Major bodily skills associated with: Small bodily skills associated with: Strength Speed Endurance Accuracy Power Efficiency

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS 2 Affected by the environment (unstable) Not affected by the environment Externally paced (performer not in control) Self paced (performer has control) Predominantly perceptual (adaptations) Predominantly habitual Movement patterns must be adapted to Has a pre learned pattern of Suit the demands of the situation movement Has no definite beginning or ending Has a definite beginning and end

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS 3 Clear beginning and end A number of discrete skills No clear start/end put together to make a series Usually a single skill Repetition of the The order of discrete elements same skill is important The end of one movement is the beginning of the next

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS 4 Performer is in control over rate of action Performer is not in control Performer decides when to initiate the action Controlled by the actions of others Not governed by the actions of others More open skills More closed skills

CHARACTERISTS OF SKILL/ABILITY SKILLABILITY SKILL IS A LEARNT BEHAVIOURINNATE, ENDURING QUALITIES SKILLS HAVE PREDETERMINED OBJECTIVESTASK SPECIFIC CONSISTENTCY (ACT OR TASK)ABILITIES UNDERPIN SKILL DEVELOPMENT EFFCIENT USE OF TIME AND ENERGYSTABLE INVOLVE INTERNAL PROCESSINGLARGELY GENETICALLY DETERMINED RESULT-ECONOMIC EFFCIENT MOVEMENTS

Questions 1. What is a continuum and why is it used? 2. Define what is meant by a Gross skill and a Fine skill. Give examples to support your answer 3. Define what is meant by an open skill and a close skill. Give practical examples to support your answer 4. Define what is meant by a discrete, serial and continuous skill. Give practical examples to support your answer 5. Define what is meant by a self paced and externally paced skill. Give practical examples to support your answer 6. What are the characteristics of a skillful performance?
