Agenda Activator, agenda, and objective (10 minutes) Progressive Era Poster Presentations Chapter 18 Reading Test DBQ Workshop: formulating a string thesis Pairing and quick pass Exit ticket and homework

Objective 17. Populism and Progressivism Origins of Progressive reform: municipal, state, and national Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson as Progressive presidents Women’s roles: family, workplace, education, politics, and reform Black America: urban migration and civil rights initiatives

Progressive Era, 1900-1916 In groups of 4-5, take detailed notes and then create a poster presentation teaching the class one aspect of the Progressive Era: 1. An Urban Age and A Consumer Society “Why was the city such a central part of Progressive America?” 2. Varieties of Progressivism “How did the labor and women’s movements change the meaning of American freedom?” 3. The Politics of Progressivism In what ways did Progressivism include democratic and anti-democratic impulses?” 4. The Progressive Presidents “How did the Progressive Presidents foster the rise of the nation-state?”

DBQ: Workshop Planning the essay and writing a thesis. In pairs, look at the DBQ you are passed and copy down the prompt. Decide what kind of prompt it is. Draw a graphic organizer to sort the documents (T chart, vin diagram, etc.) Categorize / group the documents. Formulate, discuss, and write the thesis. Pass the DBQ after 15 minutes. (Repeat 5 times)

Progressives DBQ 1. To what extent did the leaders of the Progressive Movement introduce and sell to the American public a new philosophy of government that profoundly changed the nation forever. 2. To what extent were the reform efforts of the Progressive Era aimed at maintaining the existing society and to what extent did they bring about radical changes? 3. Evaluate the effectiveness of Progressive Era reformers and the federal government in bringing about reform at the national level. In your answer be sure to analyze the successes and limitations of these efforts in the period 1900-1920. 4. The impact of Theodore Roosevelt has been overemphasized. He merely took the nation in the directions it was already headed rather than “changing forever the focus and direction of the United States in both foreign and domestic affairs” as one enthusiastic biographer put it. Assess the validity of this statement. 5. Using your knowledge of the progressive era, a clear definition of progressivism, and the following documents; assess why and in what ways Theodore Roosevelt could correctly be labeled a progressive politician. In the course of your essay, compare or contrast Roosevelt's progressive characteristics with those of any three of the following individuals: Robert M. La Follette; Lincoln Stephens; Jane Addams; Ida M. Tarbell; Woodrow Wilson

Progressives Research Use the AP study guide and other books available to take notes on Progressive reform movements. Focus on one reform of interest: Jane Adams, Hull House Roosevelt’s initiatives Etc.

Exit ticket and homework How do you write a good DBQ thesis? What was the Progressive Era? What was the most interesting aspect of the Progressive Era to you and why? Homework: Read half of chapter 19 for Tuesday. Research one of the progressive reforms and bring in evidence of your findings.
