What did he collect? What famous American was he related to? What illness did he suffer from? Teddy Roosevelt was his 5 th cousin (may be linked to 10 others) His wife – Theodore Roosevelt’s, brother’s daughter Most scientists confirm he had Gullain-Barre Syndrome, NOT Polio. This misdiagnosis probably saved thousands of lives. Stamps

Polio Elected for 4 terms 100 day Congressional session The New Deal Brought America through the Depression and WWII Fireside chats

Emergency Banking Relief Act Government inspected every bank and only allowed healthy ones to reopen

About 25% of Americans were unemployed Civil Works Administration – built roads and railroads Civilian Conservation Corps – planting trees and improving national parks Tennessee Valley Authority – dams and generators Farm Credit Administration – farmers to refinance mortgages Agricultural Adjustment Act – stabilized agriculture prices National Industry Recovery Act – eliminated unfair competition between companies

2a years Why is unemployment so detrimental?

In a paragraph, explain the causes and effects of the Great Depression. AFTER THE QUIZ Use the textbook, internet and primary source documents to learn more about the New Deal and begin to form an opinion.

It gave the president too much authority; businesses worried they would be given more taxes Huey Long – “share Our Wealth” would provide $5000 to all families as a minimum income (he was assassinated); some felt the New Deal only helped businesses; pushed to nationalize all the country’s wealth and resources

More roads, more bridges, more airports National Youth Administration – gave part time jobs to students Social Security Act – financial support for elderly, disabled, children and unemployed (paid from taxes to workers and employers) Unions gained more rights and higher memberships Gained some opposition in the Supreme Court

Review you opinions on the New Deal. Create a list about the pros and cons of the New Deal. Research examples from the past and present regarding the implementation and lasting effects of Roosevelt’s program. Create “T” charts to represent your support, indifference, or angst. (Thorough list: 10 pts., Research: 15 pts. = 25 points)
