Winter Family Project “I am” or “I am from” Poem Big Idea: Sharing experiences, culture and language develops who we are as a family. Essential Questions: What experiences make us who we are today? How do we express our experiences through poetry? How can sharing our experiences build community within the SAUSD family? Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful

Winter Family Project Our goal is for our students to reflect on who they are through discussion and research to determine how their experiences and family’s past can shape their future. They will express their knowledge/feelings through a poem written by their family. Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful

Winter Family Project 1. Collaboration: The simple act of talking with others can express our thinking, clarify our understandings, and help us gain knowledge as we learn from others. Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful

Winter Family Project 2.Creativity and Critical Thinking: Using creativity will help you develop your poem. One way is to brainstorm ideas that describe who you are and where you are from. Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful

Winter Family Project 3. Communication: Communication is an integral part of our life. We use communication skills when writing, speaking, and listening. This family poetry project allows family members to communicate their personal experiences by sharing their poetry. Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful

Winter Family Project Family Conversations and Planning Here are some ideas for this step: 1. Review some of the patterns and read some of the poem examples to determine which pattern is the best fit for your family. 2. Will you write one poem with each person taking a different line or stanza? Will each family member write their own poem, choosing the pattern they like? 3. Now brainstorm ideas you want to share about who you are and how you are a part of the SAUSD family. Create your poem as you wish! Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful

Winter Family Project I am _______________________ (2 special characteristics) I hear _______________________ (a sound) I see ________________________ (a noun-a person, place, or thing) I am _______________________ (repeat the first line of the poem) I want ________________________ (something you wish for) I worry______________________ (something that bothers you) I am________________________ (repeat the first line of the poem) I dream_____________________ (something you dream about) I try______________________(something you make an effort to do) I hope______________________ (something you hope for) I am______________________ (repeat the first line of the poem) Be ResponsibleBe SafeBe Respectful
