Physics Department Meeting June 19, 2008  Safety items: Mike Zarcone  DOE Emergency Management Audit next week  Department news  Budget update  Looking ahead  Q & A

Welcome to our new Department members RHIC/ATLAS Computing: Kunal Shroff Lattice Gauge Theory: Chuan Miao RBRC Spin Group: Kieran Boyle STAR computing group: Matthew Ahrenstein

Congratulations! Bob Palmer elected to National Academy of Sciences

Daya Bay Experiment Successful review for DOE “Critical Decision 3” Construction Begins

U.S. ATLAS Construction Project Critical Decision 4b achieved Construction is complete; operations begun Analysis Jamboree, 12/07 Waiting for beam!

On the Budget Front… The FY 2008 Omnibus Appropriations Bill was not good for science. The President’s Request for FY 2009 is very good, but will almost certainly not be realized. We have fared better than other labs in this very difficult budget year: BNL has avoided the layoffs and furloughs seen elsewhere, but the squeeze is on…  Every effort made to maximize the RHIC run  A critical time for ATLAS (LHC start-up this year) and Daya Bay (construction starting) Travel costs are a particular issue Our Department is in a mode of fiscal austerity. Physics Dept. funds Budget projections for the remainder of this fiscal year (through September) are in the RED. You can help: Please try to reduce your vacation carry-over as much as possible.

Nuclear Physics RHIC has high priority in DOE/NSF NSAC 2007Long Range Plan: ~40% of DOE investment in Nuclear Physics BNL’s Goals: Complete the upgrades of PHENIX, STAR, RCF for RHIC II science capability. Maintain BNL’s forefront role in heavy ion and spin research. Maintain the BNL research groups’s successful host roles in experimental operations at RHIC. Establish an intellectual base at RHIC for the development of eRHIC science.

Long Term Vision for BNL High Energy Physics BNL’s plans are very well aligned with the priorities of the new DOE “P5” Long Range Plan. The Energy Frontier:  Host Laboratory for U.S. ATLAS collaboration  Unique national role for advanced accelerator development The Intensity Frontier:  Leading role in U.S.-China Daya Bay Neutrino experiment  R&D and planning for future Long Baseline neutrino expt. The Cosmic Frontier:  Initiating a new effort in astrophysics: cosmology & dark energy  In concert with Instrumentation Div. work on LSST

Space News In the near term: Cleaning and refurbishing several labs. Consolidating machine shop facilities. There are longer term plans taking shape for major renovation of building 510. High on our priorities: Refurbish the Large Seminar room Repair our dismal front entrance RACF Expansion: in progress New: Department Safety Headquarters

DOE Strategic Laboratory Infrastructure Initiative A $1.5B investment to modernize DOE Labs (10 involved) The Labs are making competitive proposals BNL is proposing projects amounting to $350M BNL’s proposals include: Interdisciplinary Science Building I FY09 – FY12 Labs and office space for CMPMS, EENS, Biology$66M Renovate Science Labs II FY10 – FY13Renovate lab space in Buildings 510, 555$50M Interdisciplinary Science Building II FY12 – FY15Office space and labs for Bio-energy, Instrum.$70M Central Computing Building FY17 – FY18Accommodate growth in computing capacity$27M
