Scope Remove CDF Demolish all external muon walls Dismantle central calorimeter Refit plugs Remove trackers  Excludes dismantling Dismantle cable bridge Refurbish Solenoid Minor fixes to collision hall  Ignores filling 706’ area of assembly hall Return to collision hall J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status3

Should I stay or should I go? J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status4

Assumptions and Caveats This is a very raw first pass  Attempt to include all labor  Not fully scheduled  Many hanging tasks Mostly my estimates  Input from Dave Erikson on time per foot to cut welds  Input from Dervin Allen on some demolition tasks from earlier scheduling work Included labor for 1.5 year assumed duration  Full time building manager  Full time supervisor  50% physicist J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status5

More caveats Some short cuts  Iron workers treated as straight labor  Probably want fixed-price contracts  Minimal M&S  WAGs for crane rentals, etc. Lots of things neglected  No ES&H  Assumes truck drivers, etc. covered by overhead All costs are unburdened! Given this level of understanding: 100% Contingency J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status6

From: Jonathan Lewis Sent: Monday, March 05, :49 PM To: Peter H Garbincius Subject: Re: Jonathan - please send me your slides from Friday's discussion of CDF Decommissioning & ORKA Here it is. While dismantling the central detector and the plugs is a big job, I know this is low. Another difference from previous estimates is that I have neglected disposal costs. My current understanding is that wire is not covered by the metals moratorium, so the cable is pretty much free to dispose of. Most of the steel would go to the railhead. The rest can go to a regular landfill, so that cost is pretty low. I'll work on revising the labor estimates in the next couple of weeks and get back to you. Regards, Jonathan(added by PHG) J. Equipment Recovery Done or in progress  Pisa: Crates, HV, Pulsars for Atlas, Magic, etc.  CMU: BSU PMTs for Tauwer (cosmic taus)  JLab: PES, CPR PMTs for Super Big Bite  Iowa: Bad CLC PMTs for novel calorimeter test  SNU: L3 Computers for LQCD  CD: Newest L3 computers for CDF Grid  Michigan: Crates, racks, etc. for KOTO  PREP: 10 pallets of NIM, Camac, HV Yet to come  ASDQs for mu2e  PMTs for test beam  CSP counters for LBNE test  TSU counters for LAPD  Misc. counters and PMTs to Dubna for detector development  Plug HV for Prep J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status12

J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status13 Gas racks gone Scrap Mezzanine ready for demolition MGs and test magnet ready for removal 1 st floor CR being cleared Status 11/8

Issues Proposed experiments create significant uncertainty for D&D  Protoplasma  ORKA Cable bridge plan assumed 20-year display phase  Removing bridge before detector makes detector removal trickier  Will wait until decision whether CDF will be rolled out Scaling back display plan  Not putting plug on rails Lab-wide task force  Evaluating interference between ORKA and IARC  Considering early roll-out to prepare for ORKA J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status14

Coordination with IARC Electrical  Freeing up experimental power substation  Moving conduit for doorway Mechanical  Coordinating moves of sprinkler and chilled water pipes for interferences with interconnects, etc. Mezzanine removal Planning (Dervin Allen)  Tours for A&E, contractors, etc.  Locating utilities, electrical circuits  Reduced generator needs during utility work  Evaluating access, connections  Truck access  CDF roof access  etc. etc. etc J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status15

CY2012 CDF Building Improvements on D&D Budget Main Stairwell  Remove abandoned chilled water pipes  Enclose elevator pump 2 nd floor  Improve exits  Isolate conference rooms and egress paths from assembly area Collision hall  Sprinklers  Fire doors  Exit lighting J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status16

Plans for Display Theatre  Place for visitors to assemble  Meet scientist?  Movie? Trigger room  Electronics on display  Multi-touch table: Exercise in sorting events Control room  Flashing screens look almost like we are running  Interactive terminals: Middle school shift crews  Stations for SVX, COT, Calorimeter Muons  Mix monitoring plots, etc. for integrated view Collision hall  North and west sides blown open  Plastic covers, view of COT face, etc.  South and east, closed up in running configuration J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status17

Display Effort Working with Public Affairs and Education Making posters to document our achievements  Mix of hardware and physics  Ben Kiliminster coordinating Interactive activities geared mostly toward middle school  Cosmic-ray test stand, etc. CDF people: Ben Kilminster, Anna Mazzacane, JDL Life safety improvements in tour areas  Doors, walkways  Remove obstructions  Remove halon, sprinkler mods J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status18

J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Status19 Planned Collision Hall Layout
