Welcome to the DHS Advanced Placement Presentation Anthony Smith Principal, Duluth High School

Challenging All To Succeed What is AP? Advanced Placement courses give students access to college level coursework but with the support of high school teachers and peers. Advanced Placement courses provide the opportunity to EARN COLLEGE CREDIT through AP Exams taken at the end of the school year.

Challenging All To Succeed Benefits of AP Rebecca Graham – DHS Student College credit for qualifying AP exam scores Competitive advantage in the college admission process Better preparation for college level work Opportunity to deeply explore subjects students enjoy Opportunities to advance further and faster once a student is enrolled in college.

Challenging All To Succeed What are AP courses like? Ashima Gauba – DHS Student AP courses tend to be fast paced and cover more material. More time, both in and out of the classroom, is required to complete assignments and homework. AP teachers expect students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively.

Challenging All To Succeed The Student Perspective Abhi Ramachandiran – DHS Student

Challenging All To Succeed AP + 10 Ann Schintzius – Assistant Principal Gwinnett County awards an additional 10 points to your semester average for each AP course taken. – For example, if you earn a “natural” 82%, the teacher will add the additional 10 points to the gradebook for a FINAL AVERAGE of 92%. The grade of 92 will be recorded on your official transcript.

Challenging All To Succeed How does this affect HOPE? The HOPE scholarship committee removes the weighted portion of the student's grade and performs a recalculation in order to determine eligibility for the HOPE Scholarship. – 4.0 Grading Scale is = A (4.0); = B (3.0); = C (2.0); 70 – 73 = D (1.0); 69 and below = F (0.0) – For example, HOPE takes the “natural” 82% and converts to a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 grading scale) and adds.5. The final HOPE calculation would be a 3.5 and the final TRANSCRIPT would show a final grade of 95.

Challenging All To Succeed AP Exams Administered by schools across the nation on set dates each May Exams are usually 3 hours and contain both multiple choice and free-response questions Students take their first exam for free after a $10 registration fee. Additional AP exams are $89 per exam. Scores range from 1 – 5. Many colleges grant credit based on a score of 3 or better on the exam.
