Welcome to Mrs. Haider’s 8 th grade, Physical Science

What are We Going to Study1 st Trimester? How to Design & Carry Out an experiment Until October 15, 2014

What are We Going to Study 1 st Trimester? Energy, Machines, and Motion Energy transfers and transformations Forces and Motion

What are we going to Study? 2 nd Trimester – Properties of Matter Density Conservation Of Mass Solvents and Solutes Elements of the Periodic Table and Atomic Structure

PROPERTIES  Graphene is only one atom thick. It is 200 times stronger than steel  Highly conductive of heat and electricity 100 times better than silicon  Very malleable  Takes only 16 seconds to charge compared to other batteries  This would be great for an electric car battery compared to a lithium ion battery. Think of all the possibilities with a one atom thick item that is 200 times stronger than steel. Think about how strong even one inch of graphene would be!

What the Standardized Test (MSP) Data indicate

How Will We Learn? Engaging resilient preconceptions Organizing Knowledge around Core Concepts Supporting Metacognition and Student Self- regulation Cooperative learning

Tools We Need to Succeed? Students write entries in their Science Journals almost every day. This Notebook constitutes 15% of the Science Grade. It is an important part of the Science Student’s learning process.

Tools we need to Succeed? The Assignment Log Trains students to organize Helps students study for Tests Helps students review their work and reflect on it.

Tools We Need to Succeed?

Tools we need to Succeed? Mrs. Haider: Homework Hotline Links Documents AFTER SCHOOL SCIENCE HELP DAY IS EVERY THURSDAY.

Tools we need to Succeed? Homework five times per week- 20 minutes per night.  Late homework not given credit unless the student is absent on the date the assignment is given or there are extenuating circumstances  one make-up day for each day absent. If the student is absent on the due date, the homework is due on the day the student returns to class.  All work is to be turned in, even if it is incomplete or late.

Tools we need to Succeed? Tests Missed Tests are a “0” until taken Retakes are possible if first take is below 70% Retakes are worth a maximum of 75% Extra credit is an option for students who have less than five missing assignments in a trimester and are in good standing academically

Have a Great Year!!!
