What are the first two words you think of when you hear the word “engineer”?

Are they… math and science  building  men really smart  cars  problem-solving complex  engines  design  trains bridges  nerdy  too difficult  boring science  machines  Dilbert hard  boys  don’t know

What if I told you… Engineers are changing the world all of the time. They dream up creative, practical solutions and work with other smart, inspiring people to invent, design, and create things that matter.

Creativity To watch a video profile of Judy Lee • Go to: www.engineeryourlife.org • Click on “Meet Inspiring Women” (top of page) • Click on “Video Index” (bottom of page) Now let’s check out some of the Inspiring Women in the bottom left side -This clicks through to a section that features 12 young engineers who are all doing things girls may not think of as a typical engineering career. Like Judy Lee who we met earlier and Shaundra Daily who developed software that lets high school girls express their emotions or Emily Wren who is using her engineering degree to work in international business. Each profile tells the woman’s story, presents photos, and offers other tidbits to give girls a glimpse into what life and work are like for engineers who love what they do. (Click thru to Shaundra or Emily) And some of the profiles have videos that you can watch online and even download. I’d also like to point that you can find all of these sections I’ve mentioned in the global nav at the top. And this is also where you’ll find the Making It Happen section which shows girls how to pursue a degree in engineering. This section of the site offers girls tips for how to explore engineering, prepare for college, research different engineering programs, and find scholarships and financial aid information. It also contains helpful information about what it’s like to be an engineering student including three profiles of current engineering students. All of the information in this section is also available in downloadable PDF documents in the Counselors and Parents section that you can use when advising students about engineering. I will talk more about this later in the program. Now let’s leave the live web tour and head back to the power point presentation. Talk about how to find videos in one place.

What Do Counselors Think? It is not popular or well-understood. Appropriate only for unique students. Students who have been identified as potential engineers are shocked—they don’t think of themselves as nerds. Engineering is a limiting choice—they want their students to be able to do lots of things over their career.

What engineers tell young people • Engineering is stressful and challenging • They stress the importance of SUPERIOR math and science abilities “It’s not easy—but if you’re the type who when faced with a problem some would call impossible is even more driven to move mountains to find a solution, then you might have it in you to be an engineer.” Findings from Extraordinary Women Engineers Report

What high school girls want Enjoyable “How happy I will be—what’s the point of doing anything you don’t like?” Good working environment “If I can’t interact with people…I will probably drop the job.” To make a difference “That I would make a difference in some way, you know, make my mark on the world.” Income “As shallow as it sounds, money is the one thing I have to consider when I’m choosing a job. So the basic problem is that kids don’t know what engineering is …. How can we show them what it’s all about?
