Community Mental Health Needs Just in Salt Lake County: ► In 2006, Salt Lake County reported that approximately 4000 people who requested services were turned away because of funding issues.

Emergency Rooms Emergency Rooms ► Intermountain Healthcare reports that mental health/substance abuse is involved in approximately 11-12% of all of their uninsured ER and hospital visits and is one of the top three diagnoses for inpatient charity care at their largest hospitals.

The Jails ► At just the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, in 2005 nearly 1300 people determined to be seriously and persistently mentally ill were booked into the jail. To house this population, provide mental health services, medication, arrest and court costs it cost Salt Lake County over 7.3 million dollars.

Suicide ► Utah is 8 th in the nation for suicide. ► 90% of people who die by suicide have a psychiatric disorder ► Few are in treatment at the time of death ► 40% who die by suicide have visited their primary care physician within a month prior to their death (President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, 2002).

Health Care Needs of the Mentally Ill ► Specialty mental health providers often have difficulty providing adequate medical care to consumers with co-existing mental and physical illnesses. Individuals with serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, have high levels of non- psychiatric medical illnesses and excess medical mortality.

Life Expectancy ► People with serious mental illness in Utah lose almost three decades of life (27 years on average) due to lack of treatment and availability of services compared to the general population of the state.

The Need for Integrated Models Intermountain Healthcare: Mental Health Integration ► In various stages of implementation in 23 clinics ► Screen, recognize, diagnose, treat ► Team approach (PCP, care manager, mental health specialist, psychiatrist/APRN, NAMI)

The GAP Group ► Taking Intermountain’s Model to the underinsured, uninsured population ► A community collaboration ► Using Intermountain’s tools and training along with community partners and resources to address the need.

Midtown Clinic -- Ogden ► Primary care services, including mental health services ► Accepts all major insurance plans, Medicaid, Medicare, PCN, CHIP. Serves uninsured based on ability to pay. ► NAMI Consumer Mentor on staff ► Discount Pharmacy

Doctor’s Free Clinic – St. George ► In 2006, served 1546 mental health patients. ► Pharmaceuticals donated ► One full-time paid employee and a volunteer staff of 40 including physicians, nurses, secretaries, psychiatrists, social workers. ► Basic labs and x-rays donated by Dixie Regional Medical Center ► Receives no government funding

Mental Health Services Provided ► Mental health services include medication management and initiating treatment plans from a psychiatrist ► Counseling/therapy for 8 weeks. Appointments are minutes ► Classes and support groups available on site ► Addiction Behavioral Counseling Services

Public Mental Health Center Innovations Wasatch Mental Health: Wellness Recovery Clinic ► Have a DSM-IV Diagnosis ► Certain Diagnoses may be excluded due to the short-term nature of the clinic. ► Clients must meet financial eligibility guidelines (150% of poverty level) ► Cannot be in crisis or require long-term services

Services Provided ► Intake Screenings/Assessments ► Group Therapy ► Case Management ► Psychiatric Evaluations/Medication Management ► Medication Assistance

Valley Mental Health Recovery Resource Clinics ► North Valley, South Valley, Children’s Outpatient (in the near future) ► Sliding fee scale ► Income level below 150% of Poverty Level ► Under an order of commitment ► Severe and Persistent Mental Illness

Services Provided ► Individual therapy ► Group therapy ► Peer counseling ► Medication management ► Linkage with community resources ► Time-limited mental health issues
