John Baker By: Tiffani

John in St. John Valley John Baker and James Bacon were the first 2 people to get an American land deed in the valley. All other land owners had British land deeds. In 1825 he had a store in Baker Brooke (Canada )

John is an American John was a very proud American. On the 4 th of July in1827 he invited his friends and neighbors to raise the American flag. John was declaring his freedom from the British. On September 25 Canadian officers came to John’s house, took down the flag, arrested him and brought him to jail in Fredericton.

John’s Life John Baker was born in Moscow, Maine on January 17, He left Moscow in 1815 for the St. John Valley. He brought his wife Sophie Rice Baker, who was the widow of his brother Nathan and three kids.

John in jail John stayed in jail until his trial on May 8, Sophia was left home alone with her many children. She had many hardships while John was gone. His property and animals were seized and the family left impoverished. She fought hard to keep her family of 8 fed.

John in Jail Again John went to jail 2 more times after that. The United States almost went to war with Canada. The border was finally settled with the Webster Ashburton Treaty. John died at his home on March 10,1868 in Madawaska. He was buried in the cemetery in Fort Fair Field, over which a monument has been erected bearing his name.
