SAFETY From the police point of view is Tartu a relatively peaceful community with a small number of serious crimes. Main problem is alcohol. The police number is 110 The police address is Tartu Riia 132 The police website is The police facebook is Politsei- ja Piirivalveamet 3

TRAFFIC 5 It’s NOT ALLOWED TO: Cross the road when the traffic light is red Ride with a bicycle on the pavement if there are no special signs Drink and drive (0 tolerance) Things that You MUST HAVE or MUST DO: Wear a reflector when it is dark outside Use the seatbelt when You are in the car As a driver, use a hands-free device Car lights have to be turned on when You are driving NB: NB: do not use music devices when You are jogging in the city and You should wear a helmet if You ride with a bicycle. This is for Your own safety!

DRINKING AND SMOKING Drinking: It is allowed to drink alcohol in public places You can buy, own and drink alcohol when You are 18 years old It is not allowed to be in the public areas if You are too drunk (bad coordination etc) Smoking: You can smoke in the public areas but inside the buildings You are allowed to smoke only in the designated areas You can buy, own and use tobacco products when You are 18 years old 6

You are violating the public order if You: Make noise in the public area Pee in the public area Harass other people (talk to them if they do not want that etc) Play music in Your car or appartment so loudly that it is annoying others … Punishment: max 400euros or 30 days in the jail PUBLIC ORDER 7

PUNISHMENTS NB: these are maximum punishments. RECOMMENDATIONS  Do not leave Your things in Your car  Guard Your things (bag, wallet) in public areas  Lock Your bicycle, car and appartment  Acknowledge and accept all the differences  If You do not know the law, ask for help Not knowing the law is not an excuse for breaking the law. Follow the law! 9
