Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer April 26, 2010 ESCG3 BACKGROUND From: The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) flew for the first time on STS-91 and was powered up on Flight Day 1. Data originally planned to be sent to ground stations through Discovery's KU- band communications system was recorded onboard because of a problem with the KU-band system. Data that could not be recorded by ground stations was recorded onboard throughout the mission. Less than <5% of the AMS-1 data made it to the ground by S-Band. On the last STS mission, Shuttle Ku Band was out of commission.
Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer ESCG4 OBJECTIVES Nominally: Provide a recording of the science data as close to the source as possible. –Contingency: Provide a means for the ISS crew to observe operational data of AMS-02. –Contingency: Provide a means for the ISS crew to command the AMS-02 payload. ISS DDRS command path to AMS-02 is via High Rate Data Link. In the event ISS data systems or ground commanding are unavailable AMS-02 can be completely operated from this alternate interface. Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer ESCG5 ISS Digital Data Recording System description: –Based on a NASA provided T61p ISS laptop, dedicated for AMS use –Would provide primary on-board data recording (24/7) –Would provide play-back capability to downlink lost or corrupted data –Uses ISSLAN Joint Station Lan (JSL) connection –Crew hard-disk change-out minimized by over-writing data on the AMS disk once it is verified on the ground - only used to prolong H/D life. Ensures data integrality if the event of ISS data systems and/or payload outages. Allows for contingency crew monitor of payload status and contingency crew commanding of payload systems via “Fn” keystrokes, based upon procedures, flight notes or A-to-G voice-loop. AMS02 ISS DDRS is a CB / STS-134 crew request. AMS-02 ISS DDRS Description April 26, 2010
