SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 – 9/11 TERRORIST ATTACK On September 11, 2001, Islamic extremists hijacked two planes, American 11 and United 175, headed to California. They flew them into the Twin Towers located in New York City. Another plane, American 77, flew in to the Pentagon in Washington. In total there were nearly 3,000 deaths.

9/11 MEMORIAL A memorial for the deceased was created where the buildings once stood. Fountains were placed in the footprints f the buildings. It was opened to the public on September 11, 2011.

AFGHANISTAN INVASION – 2001 Shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, October 7, 2001, American Soldiers were sent into Afghanistan in hope to find the leader of the al-Qaeda clan, Osama Bin Laden. It took America 10 years to fund and kill him. His body was thrown in the water on May 2, 2011.

IRAQ WAR – 2003 Beginning on March 20, 2003, United States and Great Britain troops invaded Iraq and rapidly defeated Iraqi military and paramilitary forces. After violence began to decline in 2007, the United States gradually reduced its military presence in Iraq, formally completing its withdrawal in December 2011.

GAY MARRIAGE LEGALIZED IN 2003 In 2003, Massachusetts became the first state in the United States to legalize marriage between gay and lesbian couples. Now, in 2014, seventeen states and the District of Columbia have legalized gay marriage. They have the right to be married, but still fight for the right to adopt children. LAW AND ORDER SVU – SEASON 3 "On September 11, 2001, New York City was ruthlessly and criminally attacked. While no tribute can ever heal the pain of that day, the producers of Law & Order dedicate this season to the victims and their families and to the firefighters and police officers who remind us every day with their lives and courage what it truly means to be an American."
