Data Card - Quote “Because Cal Poly Pomona’s financial team had recognized a possible economic downturn three years ago, the university began preparing for reduced spending. Thanks to that foresight, the university is in a better financial situation than some other state agencies.” (“Open” 56) Quote A3 Possible economic downturn This quote explains that the university took precautions so that an economic downturn would not make a huge impact on the university. According to Michael Ortiz, University President

Data Card - Paraphrase The university is in a stable position right now because of pre-planning. It realized that tough economic times were possible and began saving while other institutions were spending. There actions were critical in helping with the future planning of the school and it’s funding. The steps that were taken helped prepared them for the difficult economic challenges the lay ahead. Data Cards: Rules for Direct Quotes

Rules of Paraphrasing

Guidelines Choose a passage that is large or full of a lot of info (a big paragraph) Don’t choose a passage that is already short and easy to understand

Guidelines Read the passage a few times Ask yourself “What is the essence of this passage?” or “What is this passage saying?”

Guidelines Change Key vocabulary Replace $25 words Get rid of fluff Words or phrases that can be omitted w/o affecting the meaning of the passage Keep names, dates, places or other info. that is important to the overall meaning of the passage

Guidelines Change the order of information Do not use the same combination of words as in the original text

Guidelines Make the passage shorter and easier to understand (simplify) Do all of this w/o losing the original meaning of the passage
