Using someone else’s words: Quote, Summarize and Paraphrase

How will quotations improve my writing?  Read the two examples below. What differences do you notice between them?  Example A:  Example B:

What is a direct quotation?  When you use the exact words of another author.  The words of the author should be in quotation marks. In one of the most famous speeches of the 20 th century, John F. Kennedy stated: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country” (Kennedy).

How should I select a quotation?  Well-selected quotations and references in your paper clarify and illustrate points to make your paper more persuasive. When you choose your quotations, see if you can answer these questions about it: 1.Does this quote illustrate or explain my point? If so, how? 2.Does the quote add strength to my paper because it comes from a respected source? Or does it weaken it? 3.What part of the quote is the most important? Have I chosen to include only that portion?

How should I introduce my quote?  No matter how you choose to incorporate the idea into your text, you want to make it clear that you are referring to someone else’s idea, not claiming it as your own.  Tip: Use active and descriptive verbs in your introduction of a quote, such as state, observe, recognize, insist, elaborate, comment, object, agree, disagree...

How do I make my quotation fit?  You may need to make changes in a quotation so that it makes sense incorporated in your own writing. If you change the verb tense or replace a pronoun with a noun, put the changed word in brackets. Original Quote: Modified Quote:

An ellipses is a mark used in writing that indicates an omission of text. You can use it to drop out words that don’t add to the meaning of the quotation: Original Quote: Modified Quote:

What are summaries and paraphrases? Paraphrase – to rewrite the text in your own words so that it is about the same number of words as the original. Summarize– to rewrite the text in your own words so that it is shorter than the original.

Sometimes you will want to include someone else’s ideas in your paper without directly quoting. To do this, you can paraphrase or summarize and give the author credit. Original Passage:

Why is the following paraphrase unacceptable or acceptable?

Unacceptable: The preceding passage is considered plagiarism because the writer has only changed around a few words and phrases and failed to cite a source for any of those idea.

Why is the following paraphrase unacceptable or acceptable?

Acceptable: Accurately relays the information in the original using own words. Lets the reader know the information source.

Why is the following paraphrase unacceptable or acceptable?

Acceptable: Records the information in the original passage accurately. Gives credit for the ideas in the passage. Indicated which part is taken directly from the source by outing the passage in quotation marks and citing the author.

Is my quotations doing what it should?  Ineffective use of quotation: Today, we are too self-centered. “We are consumers-on-the-run... the very notion of the family meal as a sit-down occasion is vanishing. Adults and children alike eat... on the way to their next activity” (Gleick). Everything is about what we want.

Is my quotations doing what it should?  Ineffective use of quotation:  This is ineffective because the quotation isn’t integrated with the writer’s ideas.  The intro and follow up sentences are about being self- centered, but the quotation is about being busy.  There is no real connection between the claim and the quotation.  The quotation’s significance is not discussed. Today, we are too self-centered. “We are consumers-on-the-run... the very notion of the family meal as a sit-down occasion is vanishing. Adults and children alike eat... on the way to their next activity” (Gleick). Everything is about what we want.

Is my quotations doing what it should?  A more effective use of quotation:  Effective lead-in phrase  Lead-in integrates the quotation with the writer’s ideas.  Writer discusses and comments on the quotation Today, Americans are too self-centered. Even our families don’t matter as much anymore as they once did. Other people and activities take precedence, as James Gleick says in his book, Faster, “We are consumers-on-the-run... The very notion of the family meals as a sit- down occasion is vanishing. Adults and children alike eat... On the way to their next activity” (Gleick). Sit-down meals are a time to share and connect with others; however, that connection has become less valued, as families begin to prize individual activities over shared time, promoting self-centeredness over group identity.

The quote sandwich  Remember that you have an opportunity on either side of you reference to include information that will help your reader understand the connection to your writing. First, introduce your point. Second, quote, paraphrase or summarize. Third, connect the pieces together.
