Explaining and Paraphrasing Reading Information Text 5.3

Anticipatory Set: Please explain the follow to your partner: Newton’s first law of motion states that an object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain that way unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

Standard: RI 5.3: Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.

Explain- you make it plain, clear, or understandable. Paraphrasing- putting an idea into your own words. An object that is sitting still will not move unless something moves it. An object will stay moving unless something stops it. Input:

 Explaining and paraphrasing are skills that help you better understand what you are reading.  You have to understand what you are reading in order to explain and paraphrase. Input:

Tips to help with explaining and paraphrasing: Input:

 Read the text all the way through. Reread any difficult concepts until you fully understand them. Input:

 Think about your audience. Are you going to explain the text to a teacher, a classmate, or a younger student? Your explanation should match your audience. Input:

 Go over the explanation in your mind before you say it aloud or write it down. Compare it to the original text. It should be in your own words, but still convey the correct meaning of the original text. Input:

Modeling: Take out your Science notes.
