Gathering Information 10 th Grade College GASP Project Microsoft, 2011

Review What is the task you are working to complete? In pairs discuss: – What is some of the information you need to find in order to complete the task? – What information is each person in your group expected to find? What sources of information did you brainstorm last class?

Which Sources Will You Use? In your pairs, briefly discuss which sources you think will be most helpful and appropriate for the information you are gathering. Microsoft, 2011

Taking Notes There is certain information you need to gather from each source in order to avoid plagiarism. What is plagiarism? How can we avoid it? – Gather source information and give credit when you use the information – Paraphrase or use quotes

Taking Notes Today’s Date – To keep track of when you found the information Source citation – To keep track of where you got the information so you can credit the source later or return to it if needed Subject of Notes – Record the questions you’re answering or the information you’re collecting Ex. Job description – hours and setting

Taking Notes Notes – Do not copy and paste text from a website – If there’s a sentence you think is important to copy exactly, put it in quotation marks. – Paraphrase! Put the text into your own words. Paraphrasing requires changing words, changing the sentence structure, but not changing the meaning. It may help to read a paragraph and then try to write what you learned from the paragraph without looking at it. Then check back to make sure what you wrote has the same meaning.

Paraphrase Example Original text on Harvard students: Harvard College’s diverse student population makes it hard to describe the typical student and even harder to describe the quintessential Harvard student experience. Students come from all 50 states and from over 80 countries; from cities, suburbs, small towns and farms; from public, private and parochial schools; from every ethnic and religious background; and from across the economic spectrum. (Harvard University, 2012)

Paraphrase Example Paraphrase: Students that attend Harvard are from diverse backgrounds. Students come to Harvard from all over the country and world and from diverse homes, schools, ethnic and religious traditions, and socioeconomic backgrounds. (Harvard University, 2012)

Taking Notes Ideas – The final section of the notes is where you analyze what you’ve read and recorded. – Record your ideas and reactions to the information, ways to use it in your presentation, your opinions, or further research you need to do on the information

Taking Notes A new note-taking form/survey will be needed for each new source Remember to use at least 3 sources (for an excellent rating on the rubric)

Before You Leave Discuss the following with your partner: – What did you accomplish? – What do you still need to work on? – What will each of you do at home and in the next class?

Review What are some ways to avoid plagiarism? What information should you include when you take notes?

Next Class Inform students that in the next class, they’ll be working on synthesizing information – putting it all together – and preparing to present.
