The cosmopolitan condition of most urban centres has made people strangers to their fellow residents (Appiah, 2006). Is community “ lost, ” “ saved, ” or “ liberated ” (Smith, 1996, p. 235) or even collapsed (Putnam, 2000)? Yet, on the other hand, people ’ s everyday life is still primarily grounded in the local community (or more specifically the neighbourhood) in which they live and pursue their dream (Keller, 2003). Conclusion Appiah suggests that a true cosmopolitanism requires of us “ the intelligence and curiosity as well as engagement ” (p.168, italics is the author ’ s) to live with others. If there is nothing else but at least one lesson that can be learned from the two studies on NH/Cs in Vancouver and San Francisco, it is that NH/Cs are effective “ institutional machinery of connection ” which can nurture and facilitate engagement among people, very often strangers, not in anywhere far but their own neighborhood, in which, as Keller (2003) suggests, people live the reality and pursue their dream together.
