Presentation transcript:

Maths games for languages The following slides are designed to practice numbers in French (though you could easily adapt them to Spanish or German) They are also designed to reinforce the concept of number and be slightly more cognitively demanding in a mathematical manner while using the minimum language. The first games need only the numbers 0-10 in French (or Spanish or German)

Maths Karaté Keep a very straight face and teach the following by making signs with your arms: +plus -moins =égale Xfois divisé par

Maths Karaté Now as a class try doing some karaté training by acting out some sums; Say aloud deux (all hold up 2 fingers) + (all leap into position and call out plus) trois (all hold up 3 fingers) = (class leap into position saying égale) then look to the class to provide the answer (which they must do by holding up 5 fingers and saying cinq)

Knowledge about number The following slides are still based on the numbers 0 – 9 and the operations + - X and = Children must guess what number/sign is behind each column, you then click on it to reveal if they guessed right or wrong. Encourage them to think carefully by not clicking on the columns in order & eliciting what they can deduce. For example in the next slide they should be able to deduce that the second column MUST be + - X or = The answer only has one column, therefore only one digital place, so can the class narrow down the possibilities with each column you reveal? (If there are 2 columns after the = then it is a 2 digit answer and so on.) If the operation revealed is X then reveal the final column next to give the children a clue which number must be involved in the multiplication and so on...
