VITA A history of shades

Shade communication: Describing color and shade

The original Classical shade guide (originating from 1956)

Vita Classical (Lumin) shade guide limitations This shade guide example is setup by ‘Value’ (lightest to darkest tab). Regardless the shades are not evenly spaced by Value or ‘Chroma’ (Lightness + ‘Richness or saturation’) and if mixed will produce unwanted inconsistencies Patients shades will often fall in-between several unrelated tabs. Definitive correlation between the tabs is lacking and confusing Looking at the shades tabs of B2 and D2, they appear lighter than A2. D4 is lighter than A3.

Classical shades are further restricted when arranged by Lightness and Chroma

Understanding Color

VALUE CHROMA HUE

There are approximately 1000 measurable dental shades. Visual Color Perception Of these 1000, only 100 variations are visually noticable. Tooth shades fall into a banana-shaped area

VITA 1M1 5M3 2M1 * * 3M1 4M1 R-reddish L-yellow/Greenish The original Vita Classical shades overlap each other which is often confusing in shade choice. Shades cannot be equally mixed with an expected repeatable result. A new intermediate shade of 1.5M1 is observed and created by mixing the 1M1 and 2M1 together. 1.5M1 Vita 3D-MASTER is ordered and equidistant for perfect matches

Compare only the top row of shade tabs selecting the appropriate brightness value

Compare and select the brightness-value from the top row only. Start from darkest to lightest to lightest Compare and select the brightness-value from the top row only. Start from darkest to lightest to lightest

The second Value group matches the best

Fan out the three shade tabs to select the appropriate Chroma or Saturation level. Now the 2M2 looks the best Fan out the three shade tabs to select the appropriate Chroma or Saturation level. Now the 2M2 looks the best

The final selection is the comparison of shades 2M2 and the 2R1.5 (The reddish) Hue appearing the better. The final selection is the comparison of shades 2M2 and the 2R1.5 (The reddish) Hue appearing the better.

An alternative value lightness 3D-Master shade approach L=Yellow & R=Red Hue Tabs

The lightness or value groups are clearly seen and view is unobstructed of hue’s Traditional

A final base shade of 3M1 is confirmed. No influence or advantage was noted from the L or R shaded variants in this case

Vita 3D-Master shade benefits for dental professionals Eliminates those unusual requests for shades. Example- “Well it Looks like shade A2,but its 65% grayer more like C1” A proven scientific -systematic 3-step approach, that everyone can follow with agreement in shade choice. Vita 3D-Master is clearly definitive. It is neither random or subjective, Vita 3D-Master Increases satisfaction and final shade acceptance by Technicians, Dentists, and the Patients.

Vita 3D-Master shade benefits for dental professionals Reproduction and shade stability remain constant in both thin and thicker cross sections. ‘Thin abutments will look more like their pontics’. Exacting shade adjustments by the specific component (Lightness)Value, Chroma (Saturation) or Hue (Reddish to Yellow) Extends the existing 29 Vita 3D-Master shades to 80 by simply mixing two dentine powders together by volume All new VM materials are 3D-Master shaded
