SMOKE-FREE BURN PILE TUTORIAL Amador Fire Safe Council 2015

First things, first: Call the Burn Line Information, Listen to the entire message. Check the weather report for wind forecasts in your area Ensure that you have set aside a window of time to devote your undivided attention to your burn pile Have your permits current (CALFIRE & Air District)

Gather your tools: * charged hose with sprayer *rake, pitchfork, shovel, pruners *telephone *gloves *water, snacks for you *lighter or matches

Gather supplementary fuels in addition to your pine needles – pine cones & sticks work well; bark does not

Sticks for supplementary fuel

Gather and burn only DRY pine needles do not rake to bare soil – leave a 2-3 inch layer of duff Duff: forest litter such as pine needles and leaves. Keeps soil cool and reduces weeds

* Select an open space near water source * Look up – stay away from overhanging branches * Rake a 20 foot diameter clearance down to bare mineral soil 4-foot diameter burn pile

Prepare to light: paper grocery bag + newspaper NO NEED FOR GASOLINE

Add sticks to get going, then add pine needles one fork at a time Wear protective clothing – cotton, long sleeves, long pants, shoes, gloves Keep it hot !

Stay with fire, continue to add needles and sticks, lift with fork and get oxygen to fire Stay within the 4-foot boundary

Stir to reduce smoke and monitor till out Minimal smoke output

Be a good neighbor – don’t smoke ‘em out!
