DO NOW: What are three characteristics similar to modern man? What are three characteristics that are not common?

August 27, 1920 – 19 th Amendment is adopted giving women the right to vote

Archeologists – study evidence such as bones and artifacts Artifacts – human-made objects (tool, jewelry, etc.) Anthropologists – study culture Culture – people’s unique way of life Paleontologists – study fossils

What challenges do archaeologists face? What activities have you done that involve piecing together evidence and drawing conclusions?

Led scientific expedition to Laetoli in Tanzania (East Africa) Discovered prehistoric footprints in volcanic ash resembling humans Footprints made by humanlike beings called australopithecines Hominids – human and other creatures that walk upright

 “What do these footprints tell us? First,…that at least 3,6000,000 years ago, what I believe to be mans’ direct ancestor walked fully upright…Second, that the form of the foot was exactly the same as ours…[The footprints produced]a kind of poignant time wrench. At one point,…she [the female hominid] stops, pauses, turns to the left to glance at some possible threat or irregularity, and then continues to the north. This motion, so intensely human, transcends time.”

 Donald Johanson exploring site sin Ethiopia  Discovered unusually complete skeleton of adult female hominid  Lucy was the oldest hominid found to that date  Lucy lived 3.5 million years ago

 Walking upright helped species travel distances easier  It also allowed them to spot threats and carry food and children  These early hominids already developed opposable thumb

 Write a persuasive essay explaining which skill – tool making, the use of fire, or language – you think gave hominids the most control over their environment.

 In what ways will future generations learn about our lives? Do you think the information people find about us 10,000 years from now will be studied in classrooms? Why or why not? Explain in 4 to 5 sentences.
